I have a 980ti and a benq 1440p 144hz freesync monitor. Would it be worth it to sell my 980ti and make a few hundred then buy a 390x until the new pascal cards come out? Or is my monitor going to look virtually the same on a 390x because my 980ti hardly dips frames anyway.

Sell a 980Ti for a weaker AMD Card? Thats a weird Question. Just buy a Gsync Display.

It will look the same but with less perceivable input lag and screen tearing if you have v sync off/borderless windowed. 390x is a definite downgrade. I'd keep the 980Ti and save money.

A 980 ti should have 0 problems supporting that resolution. That means you should not experience any frame rates below the max your monitor can run and have no screen tearing issues so g-sync would be a wasted feature. G-sync is only useful to sync your graphics card with your screen if your graphics card renders at a lower fps than your screen.

Both your screen and graphics card should be fine as is. Maybe you might want to look into watercooling and overclocking if you haven't if your card ever struggles a little.

$75 for a prebuilt watercooling loop, 120mm fan, and new shroud to enclose your card. Pretty good deal and you should be able to get a great overclock with it.
