7870 Crossfire vs 7950 stock

Hello Internets,

So I have come across an intriguing idea in the planning process for my gaming rig, and the question I put to you is this; Would it be better to start my rig with a 7950 and keep it as my rig evolves (extra monitors, etc), or a 7870 and buy another for crossfire when I want to move into more complicated monitor setups? what will the performance difference be like?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

I personally have Crossfire 7870s and love them, but never used a 7950 so I can't comment on that. D:

But I get on average ~160 FPS in BF3 on Ultra, and can play Saints Row IV on full settings with no issues (can't remember average FPS)

Oh, and Arma 3 Beta runs at about ~76 FPS with all settings to max :)

I used to have a 7950 and when overclocked, it get's 80-120 1080p on ultra (Battlefield 3)

Though sadly, sometimes (large maps with a lot of action), it dips below 60 :(

7870 crossfire destroys

But 9000 series perhaps?

How far away is the 9000 series?

No one knows for sure. That's why you have the choice of going 7870s now (or 7950), or wait 2 - 12 months for the 9xxx series.

Does anybody know what 7870s are like at Crysis? (any of them)

The original? I remember playing for a few minutes months and months ago and I don't recall running into any issues.

Here, found a comparison link: http://www.game-debate.com/gpu/index.php?gid=1565&gid2=1114&compare=radeon-hd-7870-crossfire-vs-radeon-hd-7950-vapor-x-oc-edition

I'm just trying to shave down the budget so I can get it sooner, the idea would be to start with one 7870 and then upgrade when/if I get triple monitors. And if I didn't end up with triple I'd probably upgrade to a bigger monitor and still get the second 7870. But, if the 9000 series comes and I think i'd get better performance and it comes before the second 7870, then I could just go that way.

If the rumors are true, the 7870 crossfire would be better (around the same) than the flagship 9970 (except for vram, which is important for multi monitors)

CF 7870 - more power usage, sometimes Crossfire cant work properly on games, more heat and higher price soo yeah buy 7950 in my opinion.

NCIX currently has GIGABYTE's 7870 OC edition for $179.99 CDN http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=69492&promoid=1190

$199.99 for NCIX US http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=69492&promoid=1190

The cheapest one I can find in Australia is here; http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

Is it the same?

Edit: I don't think that link works...

Always get the most powerful single graphics card you can afford. Crossfire and SLI both have issues (especially with new games) that cause more headaches than they are worth.

The only real problem I found was with the first Payday game in the menus (though I don't really like the game and haven't played it since).

If you start out by getting a single graphics card, then you can get a second one when the prices crash due to incoming new hardware.

I spent 330 Euro on my 7950 when it came out (well, 2 months after it came out). 7850 CF would have cost at least 500 Euro at the time. Now I can pick up a second 7950 for 200-230 Euro and can have 7950 CF for the same price as if I had bought two 7850s a year ago.

if there is a chance u will go eyefinity, go 7950. u want that extra vram believe me.

plus just say u dont end up getting a second card, it would be better to be left with a 7950 then a 7870.

If ur hell bent on X, dont ask for X vs Y suggestions

Not sure about a 7870 CF, it will run hotter and use much more power in the process. I'd advise getting a 7950 for the moment and go for a CF in the future.
