Thoughts on Mac Pro

Hey.

So, ive been wondering a bit. Im currently a pc owner, but planning to get an apple desktop. Mostly im browsing the net, and working with music production softwares such as ableton. And i've found a few macs that (i think) suit my needs. Its a 2008 apple mac pro with two quad core xeon x5482 chips. Is it still worth getting a 8 year old machine? Basically i want an apple pc with decent performance without braking the bank. Id love to hear some opinions. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the old Mac Pro that is this boxy silver metallic case?  Not the black cylinder.

Having dual processors is NOT a bad thing thats for sure. What is your budget?

OK, well if you get a very very good deal on it, otherwise don't.

 

Get a Retina Macbook Pro or a decently configured new Mac Pro.  Or a custom PC build?

Im trying to go as cheap as possible, id saay somewhere in the 1000-ish area

 

If your budget is $1000, plus/minus say $200, build a custom PC or buy a pre-built instead.  Unless you seriously need OSX as some of the music production applications you want to use are OSX only.

Well, the thing is, i really want to opt for a mac, cause im tired of pc crashes and stuff like that. Id figure the mac would be a better option, + it has some neat software such as logic. Keep in mind, i will use the mac for music production. So i thought maybe its a better option. And for the prices, i cant be very picky, macs are pretty expensive where i live, so im trying to find some good deals that would ship to sweden.

OK I understand why you would want OSX and the situation with prices where you live.  I can tell you these things:

  1. The hardware in the old Mac Pro is going to be dated, as you are certainly buying a second hand model.
  2. A few years ago Apple stopped selling those silver Mac Pros in the EU because the EU decided those particular Mac Pros did not abide by some EU regulations.  Hence they were taken off all the Apple stores in the EU and had to wait several months for the new black Mac Pro to be released.
  3. If you are willing to buy a new Apple product at an Apple store, ask them if you can register as a business customer.  If you can, you are entitled to some discounts, I believe around 10%.

A decent PC build with Windows 7 or especially with Windows 10 might not crash as often as with previous versions of Windows. 

 

However if you are still adamant about OSX, I would ask if you are willing to spend money on a decent MacBook Pro.  For you, the cost of the black Mac Pro would be out of the question.

True, the cost of the new mac pro is way out of my league. So, what are the best options we're talking about here?

Well I am still rocking mine have it full of 3TB hard drives and the 5870 but only 1 Xeon as the other was too much at the time. I still edit videos and pictures on it and it still does better then a 2014 Macbook air. With the other xeon and second GPU the thing will run for decades. It also has 16GB of RAM so I am good there. If you find one that has both CPUs and the upgraded GPU it is well worth it as the new trash can one is just crazy expensive for the average joe

Just keeping this here as a True, the cost of the new mac pro is way out of my league. So, what are the best options we're talking about here?

If you buy the old Mac Pro, you certainly will not have any warranty and sooner or later you might not be able to update OSX or software updates if Apple decides to no longer support hardware of a certain age.

A brand new 13" Retina MacBook Pro might be enough for your needs as it should be able to run Logic Pro smoothly. It will be under warranty and if you need a larger display you can connect an external one. It will also be portable allowing you to take your music production almost anywhere. You can always attach external drives for more storage space.

Else, buy a Windows laptop or build a PC.

Okayy. What about a macbook pro 15inch quad core i7 2.2ghz. I think its somewhere 2011-ish. The price that i can get it at is okay, +i can get a discount since i can buy it as a company laptop. Is it worth the buy?

Well first thing I would do is put 8gb of RAM in it and an SSD and it should be good to go for awhile. My 2009 17inch Macbook pro is still rocking and it has a GT9800 so it can actually play games

Okayy. What about a macbook pro 15inch quad core i7 2.2ghz. I think its somewhere 2011-ish. The price that i can get it at is okay, +i can get a discount since i can buy it as a company laptop. Is it worth the buy?

Unless you spend big bucks it's not worth it I spent 2,700 after taxes on my 2014 15" Macbook Pro 2.5 512 SSD 750m GT, at the price I could build a beast windows PC. I don't regret it though, I am running it with a dell 27 inch 4k monitor.

I do not think that a business user should build a Hackintosh.

It is not stable enough to run 24x7, not even mention he does some serious work there.

 

To run a Hackintosh you cannot install any kind of software update at the moment apple released it.

You gotta w8 for other ppl to confirm it then sometimes need to apply some small fixes.

No offence to you, but SERIOUS USER DO NOT build a Hackintosh.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

What about the macpros? SamStrecker told that his runs still fine. I looked into it, and found a Mac Pro with dual x Xeon X5482 in it. Is it worth to grab it? I mean, o paper it sounds pretty okay, better than the MacBook pro with the core i7, and the i7 on the MacBook I'm looking at is around 2.2ghz if I'm not mistaken. So, how much of a performance difference are we talking about? + the mac pros can get a gpu upgrade, wich sounds pretty nice. Idk, I'm a bit lost. I really like the Mac  Pro, but wonder if its worth grabbing it, or not. I need some light shed on this...
