Hello, I have verizon and their router is pretty bad, the router can barely reach my living room and I have chatted with them and they said its a router issue and they will send a replacement, i have done that multiple times, so I was wondering what would be a good router and modem combo?? Thanks!

What I did was I took my ISP's modem / router all in one piece of shit they give you and used it strictly as a modem. I bridged my own router to this modem which allows me to get great wireless connectivity around the house. What I'm trying to say here is you could do the same and save yourself the hassle and money of buying a new modem and just pay for a new router.

How would I make my current router and modem, just a modem?

You should be able to disable the router in the HTTP console :)

turn off DHCP / router module in you're current combo and run a pfSense box eternally.  Free (assuming you have a spare PC) and educational :D

You can contact Verizon's customer support and ask if they will allow you to bridge your own router to the all in one thing they provided you. If they say yes tell them you're going to go buy one and you'll get back to them when you do so. Once you have it they can remotely turn off the router functionality in the all in one modem they provided you from their office and all you have to do is plug your new router into their modem and configure the wireless network.

Okay, now, what router do you recommend?

Are you on DSL or FIOS?

just do it yourself and disable it from the HTTP console.  Much easier and less time consuming

IIRC you don't need to contact customer support? At least not with my ISP. Perhaps just with verizon

Depends on your price range, you can do a little research yourself on google. Also if you have trouble with wireless connection you can try moving your router/modem/whatever's broadcasting to somewhere closer to your living room or make sure there isn't any concrete or metal in the way.

I'm not with Verizon, but my ISP (Shaw, in Canada) Blocks all this functionality they give us a dumbed down router / modem so it was easier for me to call them. Don't know how Verizon works. There's definitely work arounds if they block the functionality but its just time consuming

With Fios installs from what I read, you should be able to replace the router out right. The ONT which converts the Fiber to Copper does the functions of the modem. I know that some installs they do Coax from the ONT to the router. Some they have been know to do Ethernet to the ONT. You might be able to just replace the router outright, and just run a Ethernet cable from the ONT to a router of your choosing.

Fios

Do you have FIOS TV? If so, you have to keep their router as it is the gateway for the MoCa network for the receivers at each TV. If you don't have FIOS TV, and the current router is connected by ethernet, you can just replace it directly. If the router is connected by coax (MoCa, not DOCSIS), you'll have to call verizon and get a technician to convert your connection from the ONT from MoCa to ethernet. Then you can get your own router. Sometimes they are able to just enable the ethernet on the ONT remotely, and you can just run the ethernet from the ONT to yourrouter yourself, other times a tech hasto come out. It depends on your ONT.
