I have just started using my brand new MSI GTX 980 TI Golden Edition, why the hell is there coilwhine?

Luck of the draw. Some cards just have coilwhine. 

well, yeah at least the card doesnt have a noisy cooler

Out of the near 20 GPU's I've owned, I think I could count the ones that didn't have coil whine on 1 hand lol. 

It's a better chance of you getting a card with coil-whine, vs one without IMO.

 

Some aren't very loud, some are louder, some have none. Just luck really.

You could try putting silicon around the coil. It might help a bit but not much. Its a lottery really.

It is much noticeable even when gaming (i game with a 5.1 surround sound system and not a headset)

My 980 Ti's whine at loading screens or menus when the FPS is well above 500+ FPS range. When actually playing a game, they shut up lol. I've never owned a card that coil whines while playing a game. The loading screens and menus in game seems to be the most common time when a GPU whines.

Well everything has coil whine if you hit it w/ fast enough fps. I've had pretty good luck with cards that didn't have noticeable coil whine until over 120 fps. (Another reason imho to run 100hz over 144 Hz besides better temps and utilizations.)

Good Lord I ran the mobile gaming 3dmark test and aborted the test cause my computer was a good 20 db louder than normal in pure gpu coil whine.

@OP make sure you set a frame cap while gaming. Helps prevent whine, which is generally independent of load (aka running cs:go at 200 fps is still going to whine even if it's like 1% gpu load) but rather defined by fps.

I heard ya, im playing 144hz, could that be the problem?
