Let me put this into perspective:

Card A costs $1000

Card B costs $600-650 and performs the same as Card A

Unless you're either an idiot or a guy who wants to flaunt his e-peen, Card B is the most logical way to go.

The only reason to get Titan Xs over a 980ti is if you want to show off your money or are doing specific work where massive amounts of VRAM are needed. Its a stupid decision to get them for any other reason.

again I completely agree and anyone who claims he/she is going to stick a titan x in there rig is just e-peening

I  disagree. If you have the money why not.  If you want the best you buy the best which is not card B. Sure its only a few fps. But who cares if you got the money.

Titan Xs are basically pointless since the 980ti was created, you really don't lose any performance and could potentially get 2 for the price of one (or close enough to justify it) they should have lowered the titan X's price imo.

Unfortunately, I'm not like that. Spending unnecessary money is not really my speciality.

Thats like saying  people shouldn't  buy a Ferrari when they can buy corvette for 1/3rd the price. SMH. People spend there money how they like. You thinking its too brag or e-peen is "school boy thinking"

You bought  a Maxmimus VII Hero. Talk about spending unnecessary money. Why would you do that when boards half the price perform the same? Cause you can and thats the board you liked.

I was stupid. Barely knew anything about PC building. Didn't realise it at the time.

The car analogy you used cannot be used in the same perspective between the two cards - you cannot factor in the speed, interior of the car, fuel usage etc.

Both have the same FPS, the Titan X cannot overclock as well and there are aftermarket versions faster than the Titan X itself. So either way, getting a Titan X unless you have a very specific line of work is illogical.

Okay this is my take on Titan Xs.

The Titan X is still ultimately the most powerful card Nvidia has to offer in my opinion, while the 980 Ti is a gimped Titan X with 50% less total VRAM. The only reason why you people believe the 980 Ti is more powerful in some areas is because the limiting factor of the Titan X is Nvidia's restriction on custom PCBs, custom power delivery, and custom coolers (except EVGA with the HYBRID and Hydro Copper). The Titan X is strictly reference only. With custom PCBs, power delivery, and custom coolers, manufacturers are able to deliver more bigger factory overclocks and/or better cooling than reference, allowing the 980 Ti to actually outperform the Titan X.

Now my reasoning for choosing the Titan X over the 980 Ti is 1) I also do content creation in 3ds Max where rendering is also limited by the amount of VRAM is available to the program. Without enough, there can be textures not loaded and possibly the scene may not even load at all. This also goes to GPU rendering where with the 980 Ti, you can render 60% of a big and/or complex scene and have the rest get dumped into the CPU and memory, or pony for a Titan X and render almost 100% of a big and/or complex scene.

Before all of you attack me on the Titan X's lack of double-precision, it's not necessary for content creation. And this is clearly evident in a program like 3ds Max in the render settings where you have one of two options in the "Frame Buffer Type": 16-bit (Integer) or 32-bit (Single-precision Floating Point). The only cards that should have double-precision in my opinion are the Xeon Phi cards and Nvidia Tesla cards, and the FirePro S-line of cards. Double-precision really shines in areas like medical research, and scientific research.

I would love to be proved wrong on the actual longevity of the 980 Ti by seeing you people not upgrade them for the next few years, because I can tell you that there are an ass-load of 780 Ti's, Titans, and Titan Blacks that can be bought up online at sites like Craigslist, Ebay, or even under the LTT Classifieds section, while there is still good life in those still. It makes me itch my head, going "why are these people upgrading their kick-ass cards right now?"

My plan is to get one Titan X for my rig by around summer, and another one either new or lightly used for SLI, with the same clock speeds of course. If I have the money after I get my gaming and workstation rig up and running, PM me if you're selling your Titan X when Pascal hits. Then I can say "fuck upgrading for the next five to six years", and let the show roll.

EDIT: Since I have 3ds Max 2016 now, I have found the setting for 16-bit and 32-bit operation in Nvidia Mental Ray.

I have seen a lot of people on the forums recently saying that they plan to put titan xs in their machines.

Of course this is stupid and a complete waste of money imo, but I just wondered what your guys views on it were.

If you're rich enough to not care about $2000, why not?
