So there is a little bit of an over hang of paste around the sides should I try and clean it up or leave it? Also how much paste should a put on the GPU about the same as a processor?

already got it taken apart? nice, that was quick. You could try and clean up a little, it wouldnt hurt, but since it is off to the side it shouldnt affect cooling. and yes you would want to put about the same as a processor, but maybe more of a thin line because of the rectangular shape. I have done that with positive results.

Clean it off with a cotton swap that has a bit of iso on it. If you use a dry cotton swap the fibers will catch on the transistors. The reason i clean it off is because thermal paste is supposed to be a very thin later to bridge the cap from the GPU to the heatsink and help transfer the heat but when you have excess paste on the sides it can act as an insulator instead.

Also i would recommend spreading the thermal paste on the GPU rather than using the pea method. CPU's have heat spreaders on them so it's not as important but the GPU is just the bare die so it's important to cover the whole thing. Make sure it's a thing layer though.

Looks like a tad too much. Get rid of the old crap on the sides and spread that thermal paste across the die. That's my recommendation.

Another problem with using the pea method on a GPU die is that if you use too little the corners of the die won't have paste on them when you apply the heat sink and if you use too much it will over-spill onto the transistors and it looks like you're using Arctic silver 5 which is conductive.

Just follow my original comment, I've re-pasted like 60 cards in the last couple years (refurbishing old graphics cards).

Let me know how it goes with temps and whatnot afterwards btw.

its a little thick in one spot, might want to remove some, but i dont think it will hurt anything.

It's the same.....no difference at all, maybe when pascal comes out I'll sell this so quick, last time I'll buy an amd card

although this card does do a lot better then the old one.. Because It wall actually drop the temperature it had and slowly warmer.. But I don't know if I'm not used to the noise because I had a 750ti for so long and I just don't understand how your temps are so good....

@Matt_Twinkletoes I would suggest Gelid-GC Extreme over AS5 if you can. Much better.

It's your airflow. The MSI 390x isn't loud at all in stock settings. Your airflow is probably holding it back. With proper airflow it should be around 70c with 52% fan which is fairly quiet.

There shouldn't be much of a difference. The default paste was fine. I repasted mine but my temps still sucked so I removed the bottom card. Airflow solved it. It's a 250w+ tdp card.

Ah you're right. I heard that it was and i guess it made sense to me since they claim it's a polysynthetic silver and real silver is extremely conductive. My advice was still good though based on what the company has to say about the paste.

Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.

(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)

Seem like hot air accumulated inside your case. Did you try check the temp with side panel off?

Sometimes side panel off doesn't help if beneath the card is obstructed.

Should my case fans be pushing the cold air towards it or pulling air away from it? Because right now I have one fan blowing air towards the card. What gets the warmest on the card is the fins if you stop them
