So after 20 days after waiting to get my msi 390x back from an RMA I don't get why I am getting such high temps of 80C and 70% fan speed I have the latest drivers and everything (Before you say this is normal for an AMD card, I did my research and it's not). Should I just take it apart and try re-pasting thermal paste because I'm just about to sell it on ebay..

MSI's R9 390/Xs aren't that great at keeping cool.

I'd re-paste it.

Yeah just it doesn't match reviews I watched and everything, I mean it has a beefy 2.5 slot cooler on it..

Yeah, even for the cooler, that's not typical for the card. It's typically high 60s.

If your going to sell it, at least re-paste it and see if that was the issue.

mine runs at 60-70C at 100%, usually settling at 70-71C after a few hours, and this is with 30-40% fan speed, It is a pretty good card at keeping cool, and his is an exception and is not.

You'd be surprised. The MSI 390x gets ridiculously hot even though the cooler is 50% larger than your average 290x cooler. It's because it needs a ton of airflow and exhaust to move air efficiently to cool the GPU. I get 73c with stock settings but that's because I have a fan pointed directly at the GPU and a lot of airflow. The MSI 390x is one of the worst cards you can buy for silence/temps.

Download MSI Afterburner and put a custom fan curve on it, did it with my pair of 270Xs and brought temps down 5-8C, also they aren't screaming loud.

70c with 30-40% fanspeed is really hard to get. I've seen a lot of reports of poor temps on the MSI 390 cards. It has to do with the cooler. You need a lot of airflow to get it to run efficiently. If you post a pic of AB with the fanspeed graph and temp graph that would be helpful. I need 60% fan speed to get 71c at stock settings with stock fan curve and my case has tons of airflow. I run daily with a custom fan curve which lets the card get to 84c max but that's overclocked.

look up in the thread at my comment regarding temps, at those settings mine is completely silent, im not sure whats the deal with yours or what your ambient temps are like. The only time I have EVER heard my GPU running is when i intentionally put the fans at 100%.

My ambient temp is 19c. If you always play with headphones or speakers on then there's no way you can hear it. I'll run my card at stock to prove it to you. Logically, there is no way those dinky fans can efficiently cool a 250w tdp card at 30% speed.

You can easily crank up the temperature to 95C. The cards were designed to run that hot, and 80C for a Hawaii chip is actually quite nice. If you want it quieter, turn up the target temperature, if you're just complaining about the heat and it's still quiet then turn up the fans.

Hawaii chips are very hot running, especially the 390X.

Actually I was very pleasantly surprised. I saw my fan speed stabilize at 52% and temps max at 73c(I have multiple displays so shave of 1 or 2c). I guess I've been running overclocked so long lol, stock is quite a bit quieter for me. I will still say that my case has amazing airflow and I have low ambient temps. This might not be the case for a lot of people.

This was also after a good 10min session of tomb raider which I think should accurately represent real world temps. I know the graph makes the time period look a lot shorter than it really is.
