VMWare and Processor Core Count

So for VMWare, I was wondering how many processor cores it sees. For example, my i7-4790k support hyperthreading and my question would be that does VMWare see it as 4 cores or 8 cores because of hyperthreading.

It only counts real cores but it should say "Hyperthreading: on" meaning it can use all 8 threads. But again it will only count the Ghz of 4 cores (but can use 8).

Depends on which vmware product, I have seen some ignore hyper-threading and others not.

VMware ESXi can use all 8 threads in a 4 core CPU with hyperthreading. It does know which threads are real cores and which are hyperthreaded and will schedule CPU resources accordingly. See image below, it is also important to note the calculated CPU resources only uses real cores.
