Completely off topic: I never understood why Americans say commercial. If you see non-motion picture advertisement you would refer to it as an ad/advert/advertisement. Why change it to commercial just for motion picture adverts?

Completely off topic: I never understood why Americans say commercial. If you see non-motion picture advertisement you would refer to it as an ad/advert/advertisement. Why change it to commercial just for motion picture adverts?

I believe the difference is in specificity. A "commercial" by etymology is related to something, well, commercial or having to do with commerce. Capitalism, profit, or some financial gain is intrinsic to a commercial where as an advertisement does not necessarily have to pertain to a product or economic interest.

 

e.g. a state sponsored anti-drug or texting and driving "commercial" might be more accurately described as an advertisement when aired on American TV.

 

you could also separate them by roots in Latin ad+verto lit. to turn towards and the cum+merces for something along the lines of with (for) goods, trade etc.
