Where can I learn electronics?

I have some experience in programming and can solder but I have never been able to understand electronic circuits. I have a basic understanding but I don't know much. I want to learn more so that I am able to understand schematics and all that. Is there a good website to learn about that kind of thing? A book maybe?

Take a class on it in school if they offer it. That is why I did as you had unlimited resources and since I already knew about everything except translating the colored rings on transistors I had a lot of free time to try things and blow stuff up.

Take a class on it in school if they offer it. That is why I did as you had unlimited resources and since I already knew about everything except translating the colored rings on transistors I had a lot of free time to try things and blow stuff up.

School doesn't offer it. They only offer low quality programming courses

Yes its great for the few languages they teach, but people keep recommending it for thing like C#, PHP, C++, and various other languages they don't teach.

My university actually uses Lynda.com so it must be pretty good. I get it for free through my university but I've never tried it.

The best thing for you that I can think of is a MOOC (Massive Online Open Course)

Check out Coursera (here's an Introduction to Electronics Course)

 

Many of the courses are run by Professors from good universities, and I believe for a fee come with genuine certification from the university at the end.

 

I did a course on Neurobiology on Coursera, it was really good. It consists of video lectures, followed by practice exercises and then weekly assignments which are graded.

 

Similarly, you could check out something like iTunes U(niversity), which can be accessed through Windows' iTunes if you don't have any apple products. There's probably others but that's the one I am familiar with. Online libraries full of video lectures from top universities like Harvard, MIT etc.

Another thing to check out is Khan Academy which is full of great videos with simple explanations of all sorts of interesting stuff.

You need to find a technical college. We can recommend sites all day but you can only learn so much from online courses.

Really though, I started by taking apart a Playstation 2 and googling what each part I found on the circuit board was and how it worked

 

Theres plenty of content on YouTube and the internet to get a basic idea, although if your going balls to the wall and not just hobby level, I would suggest going to a college for a degree related to it (I'm going for Elec Engineering) or taking classes related to it

I have some experience in programming and can solder but I have never been able to understand electronic circuits. I have a basic understanding but I don't know much. I want to learn more so that I am able to understand schematics and all that. Is there a good website to learn about that kind of thing? A book maybe?

This if often tossed around as one of the best, if not the best, electronics textbooks available. It's a little dated, but all of the information is relevant, because discreet electronics haven't changed much. It's very technical, so it goes into a lot of theory, equations, and such. If you can understand it, it's a good choice.

 

Otherwise, I would see about an online class or a local college course.
