Power supply recommendations please

RustyZombie

I need an ATX sized power supply that has at least 300 watts, and more obviously wouldn't be an issue.  I'm not looking for the cheapest one, but one of high quality that I don't have to worry about dying or frying other components.  Thanks in advance. :)

Any antec, corsair, evga, seasonic rated at 80plus bronze or higher will do the trick.

i3-4170, H81 board, 8GB DDR3, Crucial M4, GTX 770, Xigmatek Vangaurd Case, Creative Titanium X-fi, Razer Carcharias, 500w PSU, 24" VA panel and a 42" IPS. Thinking about getting a plant.

Nice, OK. I'd actually recommend a Corsair CX430M for that. You have no discrete GPU to speak of and your power consumption will hit maybe 60W so yeah, CX430M if it's in your budget. If not, get back to me and I'll find something else for ya :)

Not any antec, corsair or evga PSU is good and 80plus bronze doesn't mean that the PSU is of high quality. I know EVGA bronze certified PSUs that are better than some of their gold rated ones for example.

That is actually what I originally picked for this build, but that is what people had the biggest issue with.  A lot of them said it had a bad reputation for quality.

I should also mention that there will be a USB wireless adapter and and an outboard DAC plugged into the computer, but they won't draw a lot of power.

a USB DAC uses like a watt of power so no worries there. USB wireless adapter though? Get yourself a PCI one, trust me. Way, way better than anything USB.

The CX gets a bad rep for quality because a lot of people put them in systems with GTX 980s and R9 390s and whatnot. Realistically they're fine with low-heat GPUs (the CX struggles with lots of heat content) and no-GPU systems. You'll be totally find bar you get a unit that has no problems from the get-go.

My operating system is going to be Linux, and the specs of a lot of PCI adapters say they don't support Linux.  And the cheap router is going to the the bottleneck on my internet speed anyways.  I've found a cheap, Linux supported USB adapter that is capable of faster speeds than the router.  And when my living circumstances change, I'll just be using the ethernet, and i'd prefer not to have an unused component taking up a PCI slot and space in the case.

Oh boy, don't even get me started on USB compatiblity on Linux. The PCI ones work natively, I think you kinda got that backwards. Here's my wireless adapter that works without a single hitch on elementary OS, Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, and even OSX. I freaking love that card.

I mean, I get that your living situation will change but I just have never had good luck with a USB one.

And thanks for the card recommendation. :)

As @STRMfrmXMN (dude, your name is hard) said, a CX430M won't be an issue here.

Is there any reason you're building a PC rather than buying one? At this price point, I would almost consider just buying one from a PC hardware/retail store. The motherboard and case can be a bit of a ball ache, granted, but you may find you save some money.

I asked at this forum if I should consider a cheap gaming desktop for my needs.  My reasoning was that gaming desktops usually allow you to upgrade components , that even a weak video card would surely give me the power needed to use the nicer resizing algorithms when upscaling my DVD's, and that I would avoid a bit of hassle.

The response generally was that I could build something cheaper and better regardless of the price point.

Eh, if you want to build a PC not a problem!

I've thought about PMing a mod to ask if I could rename to "Storm" to simplify things but never done it.

USB wireless cards are much less compatible with Linux, and really any OS. PCI-e ones are connected directly to your motherboard and have bigger antennas, thus a much stronger signal. If you're going to be on ethernet within the next 3 months or so then go for a USB one, but otherwise just get a nice PCI-e one cuz you'll suffer a lot less.

I just want to make sure, as I rather like my headphone rig. :)

I'm saying that USB-based wifi adapters are often an issue for Linux, and really any OS if the unit is not common. Check Linux compatibility for the device before buying it is all I can recommend.
