Hey guys,

after having trouble upgrading a prebuild system (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/523046-pc-freezes-as-bios-startup-screen-with-a-new-gpu/) my friend decided upgrade the rest too.

What we'll take from the old one is a 1 TB HDD + OS, 6GB DDR3 RAM and the ODD. Already purchased is a MSI GTX 950 OC and a bequiet! System Power 8 400W. Because it's a budget build, we want to keep both components.

What my friend wants:

- silent operation (most important point)

- at least 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 at the case front, at the back at least 6 USB ports

- obviously as much power as it can

- black case, sth like the bitfenix shinobi style (he actually picked it, but if there's another case that's that style and has more to offer, suggest it)

- 3.5" card reader

Aim:

Playing games like the GTA series (from GTA III to V), simulators, cities skylines, age of empires, ... smoothly, but no need for ultra settings at 1920 by 1080.

Budget:

300-400€ (if it's really worth it, he could give another 50 bucks) (in Germany, buying from here: mindfactory.de

what i got so far:

https://www.mindfactory.de/shopping_cart.php/basket_action/load_basket_extern/id/67c5762210c062305bfdbac33110c70c0327b429d1ca826adb3

that's basically over the limit. I would cheap out on one extra case fan (the case actually comes without fans) and the tower cooler.

Is it ok to go with the i3 4160? I picked the i5 because of the simulators which are more cpu heavy than gpu, also gta v is cpu intensive.

Thanks in advance!!

For playing GTAV, you really need the cores but if you can't fit it into the budget, go with a newish AMD with no integrated graphics. Also, you already have 1TB of storage, so If you ditch the 2TB blue in the parts list, you could buy it later, when he needs the storage. I play lots of games and I have less than 500GB of files and if you uninstall all the games you don't use, then 1TB is fine for everything.

i3 4160 won't run gta V, and is really bad for gaming in general because it's a duel core. You nee the i5 quad core.

No no no no no no no.

My A6-3650, is 4 years old. It is equal to an i3-550, yes first Gen i3. I play GTA V high settings 40FPS. The i3 is dual core hyper threaded. Look at the i3-6100 vs a stock i5-6600k. With 2666mhz RAM and the i3-6100 OCd to 4.4Ghz, the i3 beats the stock 6600k in Far Cry 4 and Shadow of Mordor

First of all, when you're on such a small bugdet, you shouldn't be picky about stuff like number of USBs or case. Get the cheapest case possible. You can always replace that later, or add an USB hub if you need.

Second: You don't need that 2TB HDD. Nor that tower cooler - you're getting a locked i5, stock will be just fine for that.

Voila, you're within budget now, even with the case.

Stick with the 4160, or see if you can fit in a MSI Z170 PC MATE, a i3-6100 and 2x4 2400-2666mhz RAM, you can then over lock using BCLK to get to 4.2-4.4GHz. Ass I said before, sometimes this method can beat an i5-6600k at stock clocks in games like Far Cry 4 or Shadow of Mordor

I wouldn't get that hdd . The WD blue's over 1 TB are 5400rpm , which is terrible , especially as a boot drive.

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
