I'm wondering what to upgrade from my current R9 290.

I'd want something that's not as loud and not as hot...

Thanks

Hmm, I can only find 380s around that price in the UK, and that would be essentially downgrading your performance. You're better off saving another 50 pounds for a 390 instead.

You should be saving up for when Arctic Islands and Pascal release, anything bought now won't really give you that much of a boost considering to money spent.

The GTX 970 is an excellent alternative.. around the same performance and price and runs much cooler.

Upgrade wise... GTX 980, 980Ti, R9 Fury (liquid cooled) but I appreciate it's over your budget.

Or as said previously said liquid cool the R9 290 with an AIO solution. NZXT and Corsair offer AIO solution but the VRM's are air cooled so you'll need to make provisions for that.

or go fulllllly under wattterrrr!!

Available in the UK for only 43 pounds. Will make your 290 overclock better and whisper quiet. AIO/CLC is a waste when you could just get a new card. Anything below a 390 or 970 would be a downgrade.

Yeah. The 380 series would definitely be a downgrade and they have no technological advancement over the 290. 290 is better in basically every category and should last a lot longer. An after market cooler would be a better option

Just watercool it like i did, a G10 and some random AIO and you're good to go until you save more money

I'm sorry to say, I've no experience in water cooling...

What is a G10? And can I just get ANY AIO for my 290?

I found this so is it any good?

The NZXT G10 is an adapter, it replaces the stock cooler with an AIO, you want to use any AIO with asetek's design, ie the round ones

For example, the Corsair H80i is not asetek's design because it's square, the H105 is asetek's design

There is a list of compatible AIO's on NZXT's website

edit : the HG10 is also an adapter, but i do not know what it's requirements are

Would you recommend what AIO I should use then? I don't know which one to get after a bit of research....

To my knowledge there are two options

http://m.hexus.net/tech/reviews/cooling/77237-corsair-hydro-series-hg10/

http://www.legitreviews.com/nzxt-kraken-g10-gpu-water-cooler-review-on-an-amd-radeon-r9-290x_130344

I'd go with the HG10 as they seem to take of care of passively cooling the VRAM and actively cooling the VRM with the stock fan.

Note they are only adapters so you'll need to purchase an AIO liquid cooler with the asetek design like the H75.

tbh i think you should save up a little bit more money and get a gtx 970 or a r9 390, youll see an increase in performance and its easier then attaching aio options to ur gpu then cooling it and ull end up with lower heat temps at the end if you upgrade since the r290 is such a hot card

No, there is little to no performance gain with ether of those. Better to cool the card they have and save money.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

they different would be 10-20 frames and its the new series so it would we better and with the 390 u should have double the vram and it has cooler temps and so does the 970 and it would be better to save her money to buy a 980 or a 390x wouldnt it?

No, not even close. The 290 and 390 are just about identical. Once the cooling is worked out the OP could properly overclock that 290. The 970 really depends on the game and where the 970 can clock to.

A 980 or 390x would be an upgrade but not worth the cost. They're way better off cooling the card they have, and saving for a 980ti.

you're right about saving for the 980ti so she should keep it how it is and save the money for the 980ti but for the idea that the 290 and the 390 r identical, they have some differences like the 290 has 4gb of vram and the 390 has 8gb of vram which would be better for running games at higher settings with higher oacks and ud be able to have more things on since u have more ram availabe and get 10-25 frames more

Thanks for the answers, I'll think I'll go with cooling it for now.

Should I get the Corsair H75 or H55? The H55 cost alot less so is it gonna be much of a difference?

No, the additional VRAM does nothing for overclocking, or settings in any current games. I ran Fallout 4 at max settings with 47 mods at 1440 with my 290 and never saw a problem with only having 4g of VRAM. The OP will however benefit greatly for cooling their existing 290 so as to gain some overclocking potential.

I'd stick with the 55, or get the air cooler that was advised. If you want some advise from someone who has used a AIO on a 290 I'll tag them in. I'll edit with the tag.
