I've got an MSI R9 290X with a Twin Frozr IV cooler, I run it permanently downvolted to -75mV, -10% power limit, while being OC'd to 1075mhz core. Load temps 76-78 degrees.

If I OC it, 1150mhz core / 1450mhz memory with +44mV voltage and max power limit, 88-90 degrees (but it needs to be @ 100% for 30 min + to reach these temps, in normal gameplay with cutscenes etc it stays around 85-86 degrees)

What's pretty scary? These cards can run at 94-95 degrees and the VRMs should be able to handle around 100+.

Sapphire Tri-X has superior cooling to the Twin Frozr IV from MSI, but I just got a good chip (80% ASIC quality). It can go beyond 1200mhz core with more voltage, but I can't do it unless I watercool it, which I might in the future if I fail to find a Vapor-X 290X. (I tested the 1225mhz overclock with +100mV voltage while setting fans to 100% before and then running heaven, ran it for 10 minutes until the GPU passed 90 degrees and I shut it down so it doesn't get any hotter just to be on the safe side)

Oh.. I live in socal, but its been pretty chilly lately, around 5-15 usually where im at depending on time of day.

And no, you don't have a defective card at all. The 2/390/X series cards all run hot. The reference actually is designed to run at 94c, so anything below 86 shouldn't be a worry what so ever.

Those temps sound pretty high. The aftermarket 290x's were supposed to get in the upper 70s at stock load. But this can also be affected by your case and airflow

the MSI version? Is 80% very loud? The tri-x cooler gets pretty loud with anything above 65% xD

Just curious but what are your firestrike GPU scores?(just graphics only) when MAX Oced?

For my card 80% is loud, similar to you i can hear the fan when it's >65%. Interestingly the temp is slightly hotter in pCars around 82c.

I ran last night with the latest 16.1 Hotfix Crimson.

Do you have plans to watercool the card? Tbh i was tempted to but imagine the amount of money for that temporary card's performance boost for like 3-5 years before swapping

Especially when we are in countries where those parts cost an arm and a leg

Nah, don't have any plan to wc the card especially when next-gen is within 6 months *fingers crossed*

I do have plan for a beefier air cooler with Prolimatech MK-26 which i can get for RM150/SGD48/USD33 but VRM cooling worries me.
