1) Unless you run Optifine minecraft only uses 1 core, Optifine splits it between 2 cores.

2) Java. Java is shit.

Also turn render distance to 12-16 and turn fancy graphics to fast. You'll see a decent improvement

Anyone know why my minecraft FPS is terrible? I have a machine very capable of running the game and i have optifine installed and its terrible fps maxed. How do i fix it? (Without un-maxing the settings)

Make sure max fps is set to Unlimited/VSync

i like linux

"How do I fix my FPS by not doing anything at all"

That is what you're asking.

Someone on the  server has a $500 Hp machine with optifine and hees getting 60-100 fps maxed. Thats what i don't understand

It is not AMDs fault, also just try and go t fast graphics and render distance 12-16. How much RAM do you have dedicated to minecraft also? You should be able to tell by hitting F3 in-game

Set your graphics card into Prefer maximum performance for the game and you may find performance improves. Minecraft really doesn't use the GPU enough to keep it awake and some high end machines find the GPUs throttle so much it really hurts the FPS the game puts out (myself included). You may find adding shader mods improves performance for the same reason, it keeps the GPU awake and at full clocks and hence improves performance even though they are meant to be heavy on GPU usage.
