So i am looking to upgrade my cpu for better performance as far as video editing and streaming. right now i have a core i5 3470 but i either want a i7 5820k or a i7 6700k.
I have no probable going with the 5820k i wass just wondering how relevant the x99 motherboards will be in the coming years as i know that the z170 motherboards are new and will allow upgrades in the future.

The 3470 should already be fine for streaming. As for editing, what did you have in mind? Are you struggling to edit with your current system?

Moved to CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory.

5820k is just better overall. It's just that. :) For multitude of reasons.

X99 will be just as relevant as Z170 for a while yet for the reasons of:

  • DDR4
  • having at least six cores across all processors as opposed to the two or four on the Skylake platform
  • Broadwell-E is coming out in a few months
  • penny for penny, being better in terms of performance on an overall standpoint.

The 5820K is what I went with, and I sure as sin don't regret it. It's a tiny bit pricier than Z170 right now, but I have no issue in recommending it regardless for streaming and video editing.

Actually there are four core 2011-3 Xeons. Ain't nobody want that shit though.

Um aren't the new 6th gen high end processors using the 2011 -3 socket and on the x99 platform

Yeah I'd definitely get the 5820k and you'll possibly be able to upgrade in a few years without getting a new motherboard.

Those're optimised for multiple socket boards and higher frequencies than other Xeons. But yeah, two Xeons have four cores. More of an exception than the norm, though.
