How does AMD do in mobile? M290X

I think in terms of mobile, dedicated GPUs Nvidia does better, AMD is into APUs more when it comes to notebooks afaik

Last I checked, horribly. That was the 200 series though.

 

Look at Mac performance, they use mobile 300 series. The 5K Macbook can use a 380m.

They aren't as fast compared to nvidia gpus of the same "tier". It all comes down to the price though.

the first 5k imac used an m295x - the 380m isn't better afaik

The R9 m380 is between the 950M and 960M
The R9 m390 should be between the 960M and 965M
The R9 m395X should be around a 970M

Yep. The R9 m290X wasn't a success (I wonder why).

It's essentially AMD and Nvidia taking turns who fucks up in laptops. First Nvidida decided putting a GTX 480 core in a laptop was a smart move. Guess how that ended up going. Next the 6970M happened and... well... yeah. Then the 7970M and 680M were pretty much even, then the 780M was king and now the 980 is attempting to become the new laptop version of the 480.

The thing is (at least on the nvidia side) the mobile GPUs are actually catching up to desktop speed at an alarming rate, which seems to me to mean that they're slacking off in terms of making progress on the desktop line.  It's to the point where (like you said) they've been able to put desktop GPUs in laptops because they're not that different anymore in terms of heat and power.

Oh, don't get me wrong, this will change again when Pascal/Polaris come around. You see, Nvidia cut so much out of Maxwell that it's not even funny. That efficiency doesn't magically appear. The cards are piss poor at anything but gaming. So expect the 1080 to be once again, a 200W-250W TDP behemoth.

As for the mobile 480 - it was like usualy a 470 core but still hot enough to fry your fingers. The mobile 290X is the Tonga core so it was a better idea but poorly executed as by then the mobile 780 (which was faster) was already out. It was like a 760 vs R7 265 situation so the 780M naturally outperformed it. The 800M and 8000M series were mostly rebrands and refreshes with subtle tweaks here and there.

Once the 750 Ti dropped, Nvidia decided it was back to the rebranding roots so the 750 Ti became the 850M, 860M, 950M and 960M.

Honestly, the only gaming laptops with decent battery life are the ones with a 60W 750 Ti in them. The rest (that go to 100W and above) suck.

But its still nice seeing the performance in games with the other current Maxwell mobile and desktop GPU. They are a lot better than those based on Kepler (though I still love seeing an 860M overclocked past the performance of an 870M-without thermal throttling at all).

Honestly, I see history repeating itself seeing as AMD are going balls to the wall efficiency with Polaris whereas with Nvidia promising 10x compute power I don't exactly see them giving a fuck about power anymore. They somewhat made a name for themselves as "efficient" so they don't need to fuss about it anymore.

I wonder if we might see a fusion of the desktop and mobile lines altogether.  They're getting so close performance-wise, and we've already seen desktop chips in laptops.  Plus, it makes sense from the companies point of view: less inventory to manage, fewer different SKUs to manufacture... any reason why this might not/should not happen?

5870M was the shit back then. The desktop one used 150W under load. Less than our current 980

860M Maxwell is the performance of a 650 Ti Boost but with 2GB or 4GB of VRAM and depending on the Tess levels in games (since Maxwell is the Tess king) it comes close to even a stock 660
