A few questions about windows product keys

K3nny3

My PC had a retail copy of windows 8.1 which I upgraded to windows 10. I now have to replace the motherboard and want to know if

1.The original windows 8.1 key is the same as the one for windows 10

2.If I can install windows using the key on the new PC without having to uninstall the key from the old PC

You have to get a new key or complicate yourself with other software problems.

Since its retail key, you can use it on another hardware just fine. I would advice you deactivating key on old machine before installing on new. Otherwise you may need to call MS to reactivate key.

AFAIK Win8.1 key which is registered as Win10 will work directly.

You have to get a new key or complicate yourself with other software problems.

No. That may be true for OEM but not with retail key.

It will not work since the windows activation is not tied just to the hard drive it is installed to but the hardware it runs on as well.

No. OEM keys tie to mobo, not to hard drive.
