Long Lasting GPU

boba99999

I am building a computer and it HAS to last 5 years with no parts upgrade during the 5 years. From my previous posts many of you suggest the R9 390 but I was just wondering if the 390 is future-proof and can run modern titles (GTAV, Far Cry 4, etc.) and future titles (GTA 6, Far Cry 5, etc.) at a playable FPS or should I spend a bit more money and get the 390X/2 of the 4GB GTX 960s? Also this is not the right place to ask but should I also get the i7 6700k instead of the i5 6600k to be able to last 5 years?

DO NOT go for 2 960's.

No one can tell what will still run new games in 5 years, but the rule of thumb is throw as much money as you can at it.

I would go for the i7 personally if it is within your budget.

When in doubt, re-format.

do not go SLi 960s

go for the 980Ti as the minimum if you want a good card to last long

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

for a 5 year "guarantee" (whatever that is or can even be in tech) I would go 980 ti minimum, if not 980ti sli.  that said, if you have the option, something more reasonable now and an upgrade in 3 years will almost certainly get you better performance and/or less cost.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

or what ever is out then, 590 or something. Just noticed, this gonna get really confusing in a couple of years with GeForce cards

Well... my 7970 is still handling 1080p really well four years later....

You're probably right though. More than 3 years is a LOT to ask for graphics tech.

Max settings i think that's OP's aiming for so yeah, before just now i had an 8yr old computer that was doing fine.

Yeah that's a lot from a graphics card. I am not entirely sure if even a Titan X can last 5 years or more given the VRAM capacity. The Titan, Titan Black, Titan Z, and 980 Ti could end up hitting the VRAM limit with later AAA titles that are cutting edge in terms of graphics technology being ahead of current technology like what happened with Crysis back in 2006.

Also with the Titan X in mind, I have a thread about how I can best use it in content creation and would like some advice.
