Hi! I'm planning to upgrade my pc, giving my old rig to my mom who's going to use it for office (browsing, MS office). I'm planning to reuse the graphics card and HDD.

I would like to ask for advice in choosing parts for a budget gaming pc (going to reuse graphics card and hdd) with a budget of 400-500 USD. I'm going to be sourcing parts from newegg.

Considerations:

-SSD is not required

-hoping to upgrade the processor in the future, but keeping other parts

-inclined to using mATX, but not required

-going to use one 1080p monitor

-don't like water cooling

Thanks in advance! :)

You're better off reusing the CPU and getting a new graphics card

Or just buy a new GPU and build a small low power secondary PC with AM1 hardware or something, a 380 would be a decent upgrade and those run about 200

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

buy an Intel Pentium G3258 which is less than 70$ and mount it in your old rig for your mother, it is a quite good CPU for the price, it's nearly as good as a low i3 so for office, web browsing etc gets the job done. That leaves you with 430$ left, so as everyone said, upgrade the GPU, and Keep that PSU and Case!!! They're freaking good quality for gaming and video editing, with all due respect but they're components that would be wasted along with the money you'll spend in a probably lower quality ones without the need. So this is what I would do:

KEEP:

-PSU, CASE, CPU

Parts for your mother's rig:

-PSU: Nox Urano SX 500W (under 30$)

-CASE: Aerocool GT Advance (under 30$)

-CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 (70$)

New Parts for your rig:

-MOBO: Gigabyte Z97-HD3 (85-95$)

-RAM:just any 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz would cost about 35$

-GPU: since wou've got about 250$ left from your budget I would get a GTX 960 G1 Gaming or a R9 380x, but If you squeeze +50$ You might get a GTX 970 or a R9 390

So to avoid confusions, both rigs at the end would have this parts (if I was you)

-Mother Rig:

-CPU: Intel Pentium G3258

-Mobo: GA-Z87-D3HP

-RAM: Crucial 4GB

-CASE: Aerocool GT advance

-PSU: Nox Urano SX 500W

-GPU: MSI GTX 750 Gaming 2GB

Your rig:

-CPU: Intel Core i5-4570

-MOBO: Gigabyte Z97-HD3

-RAM: Any 8GB 1600 MHz cheap

-PSU: Corsair VS650

-CASE: NZXT Source 210 Elite

-GPU: you decide that, I would take the GTX 970 or R9 390 but if you can't squeeze +50$ then go for a 380x or a GTX 960 G1

Hope that helps out

Thanks for the input! :)

Question though, is it advisable to get a z97 board instead of an h97 board? I read somewhere that you'd need a K processor for the z97 board.

Not really, you can run any LGA 1150 CPU in a Z97 motherboard, the thing is you can't run a K processor in a H97 Board due to the massive power of the CPU, H97 aren't as strong as Z97, besides, it leaves you with some future upgrade to a 4690K or a 4790K if you wish in the future. I had a H97 board and it didn't work quite well with my i7 4790K so I got a Z97 (Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 3) and trust me it's worth the little extra cost, don't go cheap in your motherboard because it's what is going to determine your future upgrades.

Oooh. Okay. Thanks! Any suggestions for another viable mATX mobo?
