I wanted to know what ram speed is used for. Does it make games/programs load any faster? For example, how much difference are there between a DDR4 2133 mhz and a DDR4 3200 mhz?

It's helpful for RAM-intensive applications, which is not games or anything normal people do. Heavy video editing or 3D modeling or something like that might see a marginal improvement but overall RAM speed isn't really very important at all.

The difference will not be very noticeable, mhz are basically cycles per second, so the higher the cycles per second the faster RAM can be accessed by the CPU in order to complete tasks and access processes stored in memory. So 3200 would be ideal but once again, difference is minimal especially if you have 8+ GB

People have gained improvements using faster RAM in games, including Fallout 4 and GTA V. I mean like 10FPS gains.

Interesting. I haven't heard about it.

Here you go: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-the-best-pc-hardware-for-fallout-4-4023

It's in the column to the left when you scroll down. Fallout 4 I think is the example.

Hmm. I am not entirely sure about other games though. Also to note too is motherboard compatibility since most motherboards on the market can't even handle RAM that's faster than what, 2800 MHz? Also I'm not super interested in fast RAM too since it can introduce stability issues even though there are motherboards that can handle RAM speeds in excess of 3866 MHz, and 2133 MHz RAM for DDR4 is the best since 1) it's very stable and reliable, 2) they're generally cheaper for various brands, and 3) it has the widest compatibility with motherboards.

At least for gaming I haven't seen a noticeable difference between 1600MHz and 3200MHz DDR3 RAM in the same system.
I don't know how switching to DDR4 RAM might affect gaming. But since you'd need to change a lot to upgrade to DDR4 RAM

The new born system is expected to perform a little better then ;)

I wonder if you're referencing the placebo effect, since you mentioned expectation and then a winky face.

No, sorry.

The thing is just if I'd wanted to upgrade to DDR4 RAM I'd need to change the cpu, the mainboard and the RAM.

So i5 4690K to i5 6600K, ASUS Z97-P to ASUS Z170-P, and Kingston HyperX Beast to Kingston HyperX Savage.

Even though these components are very similar they are over a year apart from each other. I really expect them to perform slightly better =)

From a technical perspective, they do, but not sure if you would actually notice a difference depending on your use case scenario.

I agree on that!

Personally I think I won't upgrade my system for the next 3 years.

When the new ZEN architecture from AMD or 8 core Intel processors are out and are really better for gaming I might be upgrading... ^^

If you want to discuss this further, you can PM me. I don't want to derail the OP's topic further.
