You already have a router, want the best wireless you can get, Gigabit ports and have a budget of $150AU? If your budget was ~$200AU or so I'd suggest Ubiquiti wireless gear and a small switch. If it was ~$300AU I'd suggest you also replace your router with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter. But for $150AU I can only suggest this.....

I have one of these, never had any issues with it. And you can be assured that I got it for myself after much researching. It's pretty-much the cheapest piece of wireless gear I recommend people. The only huge disadvantage over Ubiquiti gear is that it lacks PoE and the central management, nice features but not essential. If people want something cheaper? I just tell them to stick with what they have.

Unfortunately there is nothing comparable in price to Ubiquiti as it's on par with Cisco and other enterprise gear but being open source based, is a fraction of the price. Note the EdgeRouter is no easy tool to setup in comparison with consumer stuff but is certainly easier than most Cisco gear as it does have a decent gui.

All of these are good idea and i can see all of you guys are suggesting going with Ubiquti gears as currently just splash some cash on my new PC parts and i dont have much spend. I really thinking spending some more cash on Ubiquiti router and spend some cash on extender (Hoping the price will drop) will be more worth my money. I really hope the prices  drops on router in coming of this year as my current setup is too bad. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey guys, I still have old router which is still 2.5ghz and only has 100mbps ports should consider a router upgrade. I was wondering if i should spend a lot of money on best router but i don't really think this is right ideas as new technologies is always happening. What is good overall router less than 150NZD which is dual band.

There's not much of a difference to be honest, it's only really worth it if you're running 2.4GHz in a crowded area where all the bands are already covered. Otherwise, 5.0GHz has a smaller radius among other things...

Does the different their of 5ghz wifi speed matter in real life?

Some of the Asus dual band units along with the Netgear stuff is probably worth a look. Not a huge fan of the DLink, TP Link or similar. Ideally a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter + UniFi AP but that is many many dollars.

As for bands, 5Ghz is becoming more and more common especially over the last 12-18 months. Probably worth getting something that is dual band.

I had a look at Ubiquiti EdgeRouter, which look great choice but the UnFI AP does cost a lot of money over here in Australia. I am able to set Ubiquiti EdgeRouter with NBN services, if so is there other option for UnFi AP which is cheaper around 50 dollars mark?.

Is the choice of router below a much better option? or should i spend some more money? To be fact with current NBN the main bottleneck is still going to be ISP with max speed at 100/40mpbs. The only main problem i worries is the range of these routers? Does external anteaters effects much on range?
