Recommendations for a new laptop

AlanAlan

Should I go for it?

Is there any better choices?

Nothing better I could find on NewEgg. The closest thing is the same price and only had a Dual Core i7. It has better graphics (AMD built in AMD Radeon R7 M260) But you lose 2 cores. I would go for it :) Just don't expect to play Crysis on it.

Spoiler

Not even sure it can run minesweepper at low settings.

Jk, that's a nice CPU but totally overkill as it seems it has no dedicated graphics (prob. why it has a HQ i7).

I would suggest going for an i3/i5 as it will do the same for a lot cheaper.

Note:

Not sure if you are into building PCs, but if you built your own, for that money you could even game on it.

What would you suggest?

It will work fine, as for better machines, not sure, don't use laptops

What are some good places to shop for laptops?

Buying New? Amazon, NewEgg, Best Buy only if they have a good sale or something else to really make the deal sweet because they are overpriced most of the time.

I wouldn't recommend buying a used laptop just because you never know if it has been stripped out or not. But I know people who have bought used laptops and they work great for them. You could go to eBay or Craigslist for those.

For that price? Not much you can beat compared to the one you linked (because it's on sale.)

I like the Razer Blade Pro but that's a $2,000 piece of hardware.

The one he linked is both awfully poor in terms of build quality and has crap cooling.

The Blade also overheats like no tomorrow.

I will agree and disagree. If you have a Asus RoG it's good. My NON-RoG Asus laptop with just a i5 and integrated graphics got 25 FPS on skyrim when it launched.

Agreed with both statements but he was referencing hardware. If you get a same price with a lower spec Dual Core i7 you could get a better built machine which for his price he might should consider, but for Performance / convenience he has a good product.

I will disagree - a guy here bought a GL552 from the RoG series, it broke within a month, it's been 2 months since he sent it for RMA and hasn't heard back

The GL552 has a plastic body resulting in horrible flex on everything from the screen to the keyboard and palmrest

The G551JK has a thermal limit on the GPU at 74*C resulting in it being unusable for gaming.

The G550 series usually have very poor cooling and overheat.

All in all, the last RoG laptop that was worth a damn came out in 2013....

Not really, specs aren't what he should be chasing. Better get a i5 4200H and a solid machine than a i7 6700HQ and a plastic piece of crap

The ones pre-2014 are rock solid. I'd have bought one if they were still available :P

The i7 Quad-Core is going to suck power like no tomorrow -- even if it a 'Skylake' architecture chip. Adding to that is the 1080p screen.

Weight wise, the laptop will also be fairly heavy...and given the 15.6"+ size.

If all you will be doing is Microsoft Word, web browsing, and videos, I'd recommend something that is

  • 14" or smaller (all up to preference nonetheless)
  • Intel Core i5 or i3 ("U" variant for better battery life)
  • Solid State Drive storage (for reduced weight, power usage, and speed)
  • Cut the DVD drive since all it is is extra weight

I've got a 15.6"  ASUS laptop (i5-3337U with GT 740M), and a (recently purchased) 14" Lenovo Ultrabook (i5-4300U), and the difference is massive.

The low power i3 and i5's has MORE than enough processing power for work, HD videos, and light gaming, even on the iGPU -- especially on 5th and 6th generation Intel chips.

This is the Lenovo T450 that I purchased back in November. It's the older model with the i5-4300U (same chip found in the Surface Pro 3), and the newer models replaced the i5 versions with the i5-5200 / i5-5300U. I can get nearly 10 hours of non-stop use on a single full charge (Word documents, e-mails, and web browsing, putting in 12~13 hours days during the final exam period).

The particular unit NCIX carries comes with 4GB of DDR3L RAM and a 500GB mechanical HDD. The 4GB is plenty for your mentioned needs, but you can easily upgrade it to 8GB or 16GB of RAM, and swap in an SSD for relatively cheap (16GB of RAM and 240GB SSD for ~$140 Canadian).

http://www.ncixus.com/products/?sku=110957&vpn=20BV000BUS&manufacture=Lenovo

Spoiler
Lenovo provides a manual with step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade / replace parts on their laptops/Ultrabooks. Look me less than 20 minutes to upgrade the RAM, and put in the SSD.

I have been seeing positive feedback on are the ASUS Zenbook's and 2-in-1 laptops. The aluminum construction, full 1080p displays, and SSD storage is quite nice, but a unit with the latest Intel i3/i5 creeps into the $700 ~ $800 price range.

I am currently looking for a new laptop to replace my old one. My budget is under $699 dollars. I would like it to have a 1080P display with touch screen, 8gb of ram, and 1tb of hard drive space. I will be using the laptop for word processing, movies and videos streaming. What are some good choices. Thank You!
