Single CPU in dual socket board?

Go to solution Solved by Stefan1024,

So I saw Linus's budget 8core vid, and thought I should use a similar set up for a mildly overkill NAS/file server. So can I run just one CPU in this board: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-S5000VSA-S5000VSA4DIMM-Dual-Socket-771-Xeon-Motherboard-4-DIMM-Model-/191694706698?hash=item2ca1e5180a:g:5OwAAOSwDNdV4bNP

With 1 Intel Xeon E5420

Thanks in advance.

Yes it will works. But take care, not all exansion slots will be available.

Companies ship single processor servers all the time and they work fine so I see no reason why this wouldn't be compatible. I was running a 771 dual socket with only 1 CPU before (HP DL360 G5 Xeon 5130). The nice thing is that you should be able to just add the second CPU whenever you want if you want. Also I would suggest one of the higher clocked X chips if you can like X5450, or the X5492 which are both LGA 771 compatible although they are power hungry at a TDP of 120W and 150W, but they perform well.
