Light Gaming and Work Build, Indecisive!

*If my replies seem rude or hostile I am just trying to get the best solution by questioning you!*

Hey there!

I 'finalized' a build a few weeks ago on here on a different section and since then Christmas, time and spending to much of my life looking at tech stuff has made me change my mind:

I want to build a light gaming PC, primarily for CSGO, doing basic work and web browsing. I may also get more into photo editing at some point. Light video editing may happen occasionally but is not a big concern. I also would like to be able to play games at mid-high settings such as GTA V and BF.

Budget: ~£600 with GPU ~£500 without (UK, would save if possible, flexible)

Resolution: 1x 1080p (maybe two later?)

Games: CSGO, GTA 5, BF4, Starbound, Minecraft etc. (the last two run on most things!)

Life Time: 3-4 years, possible upgrades after 1-2 years

Notes: I am happy with just 250gb for now, I will upgrade later with a 1TB HDD; the 4590 is very little more than the 4460; the Z97 is £2 more than the H97 board on amazon, so why not!

Current Parts List (Updated):

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£155.00 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI Z170A PC MATE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  (£71.39 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory  (£42.56 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  (£55.76 @ Amazon UK)
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M ATX Mid Tower Case  (£53.52 @ Amazon UK)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link TL-WDN4800 802.11a/b/g/n PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter  (£24.99 @ Amazon UK)
Other: BeQuiet Shadow Wings 140mm PWM case fan (£11.27)
Other: BeQuiet Shadow Wings 140mm PWM case fan (£11.27)
Total: £529.89

So, is that a good choice? I have seriously considered the R9 380 and the i3 4170 but feel that the better CPU now will save me money later and that I am better of getting a decent GPU now and maybe buying a 970/980 equivalent in 2 years time. I Know that the SSD is not the best bang for my buck but I want one, so I'm having one 'cos it doesn't matter too much to me.

In terms of refinement, are there better value mobos available? Is there a better specific choice of graphics card?

I would change out the motherboard for something a little lesser since you have a locked CPU. Or go for one of the K series chips.

Fine you want the PSU tier list? Have the PSU tier list: https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/1116640-psu-tier-list-40-rev-103/

Go for core i5 4670k or 4690k and if u want your system to last you about 4 years then you can go for the skylake intel core i5 6600k but that's going to cost more. And this is actually more "future compatible" is not "future proof" than the i5 4590 because it has LGA1151 socket as compared to 4590's LGA1150

Why the higher haswells? I don't need piles of gigahertz and they are noticeably pricier. I am aware that it is not future proof but I don't want to stretch to a skylake. However, I have toyed with getting this, minus the gpu and then getting either the 4690k or a skylake. Given that I only play CSGO really at the moment, would that be feasible? I shall do some research...

Oh, further though, would a Skylake i3 be a good choice? I could then get a later 1151 i5 in the future, my brother might even buy the i3...

The H97 version is about £2 cheaper on amazon, so why not give myself the option? I want an ATX board mostly for the ease and the fan headers and I can't find any B85 boards in ATX. I was previously looking at the B85 ASRock Pro3 mATX for £44 but it has only one fan header and I will have this thing right next to me and won't always have a headset on.

in that case go for the k series. And you won't be facing any issues till the time you're playing at 1080p only

You have a SSD mounting kit in your plan... you don't need that shit.  I have my SSD mounted with Velcro.  You can literally tape it on the case somewhere if you want to.

Thak you for the suggestions, I would like to stick to amazon for simplicity and reliability though. In terms of fans, I shall swap one to the front and go 2 front/1 back for slight positive pressure. I have updated the list. :-)

The core i3 6300 is £130 compared to £160 for the i5 6500. How great is the real world performance and life span increase?

The i5 is what you want.  The two hyper-threaded cores of the i3 are no substitute for the two real cores of the i5.

If you save money by expanding your purchase retailers, you can a much better system... just a thought.  I will check out Amazon to see what I can drum up...

PCPP is being temperamental, I will try again in like 15 minutes.

Thanks, I suspected so. This is getting pricey... I shall try to make my parents buy me the monitor as well as the OS and Office license...

Thoughts on use for a year or so without a dedicated GPU? I am currently managing with an i5-3210m but it is not really enough even for CGO, it runs lowest settings at 30-70 FPS. I don't mind lowering settings if it is playable and solid 60+ FPS.

EDIT: This makes me really consider it,

EDIT2: If I go this route, unlocked top end i5s seem sensible...

I honestly do not know how well the iGPU on the i5 6500 will run CS:GO.  I do know that Skylake has marginally better graphics on board, when compared to Haswell.

If your budget does not allow for a good PC with a dGPU, then a PC running on the iGPU is sometimes the way to go.  Prepare the build for the GPU, then save up for it.

PCPP is still down for me... I think I can get you a decent build with a 380... but I have to wait for PCPP.   :(

I'd rather get a good set of other hardware and buy the GPU later, I think I can manage on a desktop CPU's integrated graphics. A 380 4GB or 970 can come later.

Roughly, yes. Yet you seem to have saved a hundred quid! I do not want a mATX board, I need fan headers and would also appreciate have the ease of use, this is my first build. I will use the 550w psu thanks, gives me plenty of headroom even with a 980 (you never know, my friend got one cheap) I like the 210 case for the money, I might change my mind though.

Apart from that, how much does RAM speed affect this cpu? I know the i3 6100 gets huge benefits...

Can I overclock the i5? Is a 6600 worth it? even a 6600K?

Would you recommend those fans over the Arctic F12? Why?

Are there any £50-60 ATX Z170 boards?

UPDATE: I will be avoiding that SSD, it sucks; I found the MSI PC Mate ATX Z170A for just over £70. Build total: £500

Ok, I've just looked some stuff up, you can do base clock OCs on this chip, but does the MSI motherboard give you the option? It does disable the on-board graphics meaning it will be a thing to do when I get a graphics card. Apparently though, it can be well worth it. I shall hold of and decide later if I have the option, I can buy a bigger (maybe liquid?) cooler then.

That might, annoyingly, make the ASRock Pro4S worth it...

@Armadillito

MSI and AsRock Z-Series motherboards are the only ones that will allow a locked i5 to overclock by increasing the BCLK.  You can get a decent gain from overclocking this way, but... you won't need to overclock a 3.2GHz i5 for a few years at least... not for gaming.  You can probably save a few (£10) by going with the 6400 (2.7GHz), and then overclocking that later on.

No, the i3 does not get huge benefits from faster RAM... not any more than an i5 or i7.  It all depends on the application.

The Enermax fans are quiet.  I believe the Arctic fans can only be mounted in one direction, I will have to look again.

This seems to be a good price and a good system. It is cheap enough now, and I have upgrade room and overclocking room later. It should take the next generation of CPU too and be relatively future compatible.

SHOULD I BE WORRIED BY OUT THE OF STOCK NOTICES, AMAZON SAY THEY WILL DELIVER WHEN AVAILABLE?

Would you recommend sticking an HDD in too now?
Could I get away with 120gb SSD/ 1TB HDD? \if so, what games could I fit on the SSD after a windows 7/10 install?

If you are going to get a decent case, get a decent case.  Paying £15 more for a case does not make it good.  The Source is a shitty case, don't pay extra for it.  The £28 Versa will do the same damn job.  :)

Yeah, I was skimping on the case but wanted a good-enough looking one for my desk. That will do nicely now, though. Nearly fully filtered, it seems! No meshes needed.

Added better fans, 140mm too - they're quieter and I might as well.

I think I'll throw in the HDD now too. This is going up in price again but it saves later upgrades except the GPU.

If you are going to get a decent case, get a decent case.  Paying £15 more for a case does not make it good.  The Source is a shitty case, don't pay extra for it.  The £28 Versa will do the same damn job.  :)

One more thing: I should be OK with a stock cooler shouldn't I? I've heard they're good enough unless you do serious overclocking.
