Hey guys,

A guy im my town is selling this rig for 100€ (109 USD) :

- Cpu : DUAL-CORE 2.5GHZ
- Memmory : 4GB DDR2
- HDD : 250 GB@ 7200 RPM

- GPU : ATI RADEON HD 2400 PRO

- Card reader
- Bluetooth
- Ethernet Lan 1000 Mbits / s

Link to the seller's post about it

I'm curently running (not joking) a Dell Latitude D610 laptop (hooked to a monitor) which has :

- CPU Intel Pentium M 1.86GHZ

- Memory : 2GB DDR2

- HDD : 70GB

- OS : Windows xp (7/8/10 don't run well on it)

...That's about all I can say about it.

I use my PC about every minute of the day (excluding school time) and this laptop has been the worst thing ever so I'm planning to build a 500$ rig in a couple of months.

My question is : Is it worth buying the 100€ rig to use for the next couple of months?

I'd also like to know what that pc is able to do (How would it run youtube? Can it handle 1080p movies? What are some games i could play on it?, what could i use it for when i get the other computer?, are some of the parts usefull for a better build?...).

Sure why not?

You could always offer a bit lower too. And I'm gonna guess the monitor is a 4:3 or 5:4 monitor, so that's meh (if it was 16:9 it would have probably been a much better deal) and you can always just sell it later I guess

Don't. This thing is ancient. You'll be better off putting this money aside to get a better PC later on.

Also, ditch WinXP and install some lightweight Linux distro.

Mostly because that 100€ could buy him a G3258 + used motherboard. Getting that would be equal to burning 100€ - he won't reuse any of the components later on, and selling that won't be easy either.

Getting mixed opinions here, could someone maybe go more in depth (if possible)? :)

Sure.

Dual Core 2,5 GHz means it's probably E7200 or P8700, if it's Intel. Kinda ancient, but you could always upgrade that to a Q6600 and go with that for some time, it could even handle gaming. However, as far as LGA775 is concerned, it's an ancient platform with virtually no upgrade paths (it may or may not handle LGA771 Xeons for example), and seeing that the guy has zero information about the hardware that's there, it's probably a shitty motherboard/some kind of a prebuilt.

Then that HD2400 - well, that's an ancient card, which never was a gaming card in the first place, forget about any gaming on it.

Unspecified PSU - expect some shitty quality one. Which also limits your upgrade path, if you decide to upgrade anything. For gaming you'd need a better GPU anyway, as the current one is mostly designed for lightweight office use only.

As far as the accessories are concerned - they're always nice, however they're probably going to be the cheapest stuff out there.

So you'd basically pay 100€ for an office PC, where you would have to upgrade at least GPU in order to get any gaming performance out of it. With not much more you could have a totally basic G3258 rig, which would allow for upgrades in the future and would handle games better even on the iGPU (50€ G3258 from that site, a Z97 motherboard - Z97 Anniversary goes new for €80, 4GB DDR3 for 25€, EVGA 600B PSU is for $40 on Amazon right now), source any case and you have a modern rig that's upgradable in the future.

Sure, it won't have fancy Bluetooth and a card reader, you won't get an unspecified keyboard and a mouse with that, but it will be far better than that. ;)

As far as monitors are concerned, you can source them for pennies, even I gave away 2x 22" 1080p some days ago.

Alright, thanks for your time Rahnie, exactly the kind of response I was looking for (I have no knowledge on older hardware).

I can't disagree with any of your points so i guess i'll keep the 100€ for my future custom build. :)

If you want a rig in the meantime, look around. Sometimes companies will dispose of their old hardware, which mostly consists of LGA775 PCs, people also have their legacy hardware stored and collecting dust - just ask around. Especially since you will have limited budget in the future - it's just not worth investing 100€ in something you'll have to upgrade anyway. ;)
