So if any of you saw my recent thread you'll know I've had to move my PC to fix an overheating issue with either my GPU or PSU. Now it sits on my desk, loud, in my ear. While I'm playing games it's fine but as soon as I take my headphones off I'm hit with the sound of some industrial grade fans whirling in my ear.

With Christmas just gone, I have a lot of money that I'd like to invest in some new fans. I have x1 140mm fan in the front and a 120mm in the back. Can you guys help me find quieter fans and possibly explain what makes different fans quieter? Are "silent fans" actually any quieter? Do they remain just as or even more efficient?

EDIT: Almost forgot, what positioning of the fans do you recommend? My rig gets very hot hence the overheating issues. My PSU is currently blowing out through a dust filter at the bottom of the PC. While I believe both fans (140mm and 120mm) are blowing out also, since I can feel air being blown onto my hand, and the front dust filter collects a lot of dust when I clean it, the back one, not so much.

Thank you! :)

The most important part of any fan is the motor and bearing. They produce the most noise.

It is also important at which speed your fans are running. A fast spinning fan will obviously be louder than a slow spinning one, because it moves more air and creates more turbolences, which leads us into the fan blades. A bad fan blade will create more and louder turbolences than a well made one. This also depends on the materials and the fan shroud.

If the fan blades aren't perfectly balanced, then shroud will vibrate. Therefor it is also important to have rubber dampers on the fan, to prevent that.

So the first thing I would do is to regulate your fan speed. Maybe you can get your existing fans to run quiet by reducing their speed.

If that doesn't help I recommend you the be Quiet! Silent Wings 2. They are expensive, but one of the best performing fans available on the market.

If you don't want to spend that much money per fan, cause they are quite expensive, then I recommend you Pure Wings 2. They don't come with all the accesories that the Silent Wings 2 has, but they still use the same motor and fan blade design, which makes then already very quiet.

i'd get pure wings 2 or silent wings 2 too like @Senzelian said. I have Pure Wings and they are very quiet.

For fan placement: which case do you have? normally one as an intake in the front and one as a exhaust at the back

Thank you so much! That really did clear everything up!

As for the beQuiet Silent Wings 2, is that all they cost? When you said expensive I thought we were talking £30-£40 each! That's an awesome price. I think I'll go ahead with those!

You can get PWM in both 120 and 140mm Rosewill Hyperborea, around 13 bucks a peace

Its like akasa apache but its not branded

what kind of PC you have?

its important as some be quiet fans might be dead quiet but might not move enough air.

i would be worried about heat if you have like overclocked AMD 8 core and high end gpu or dual

Nevermind, silent wings are perfect. Get PWM ones, if you can.
