Adding LAN lanes?

Hi everyone, 

 

I just wanted to know if by adding a new PCI network card I will be able to double local network bandwith by using both onboard LAN and the network card.

 

I suspect that wouldnt work (especially if it works like onboard graphics/graphics card), but who knows... 

 

If you have any idea, I'm all ears!

Can't really increase your bandwidth unless you go 10Gbit.

 

There is a thing called LAG - Link aggregation, but only useful when many people are accessing files at the same time.

what you *can* do is add a second NIC, and tell different people to use different NICs.

(example: on-board nic for you and dad, add-in nic for sister and mom)

 

that said, is your speed limited by your system, or by shitty network equipment?

you mentioned 100Mbit, and i doubt your motherboard isnt gigabit capable.

do you happen to have crappy hubs/switches/routers that cant do gigabit?

I'm poorly equiped when it comes to network. 

 

My router/access point is gigabits compatible, but it is very far from my desk. I use PLC (up to 500 Mb/s) for the desktop and 2 smar TVs.

LAG needs configuring on the switch, which your switch cant be configured.

It's quite straightforward to configure, you would need a managed switch however.

Yes but then you will need a switch that supports it, but using two 100Mbps connections is pretty stupid. Assuming perfect scaling, that only adds up to about 20MBps. Far less than your HDD can (probably) read at. Just get a single gigabit network card and use that. It will end up much faster than two 100Mbps connections, it won't require a new switch and extra configuration and it is much less likely to go wrong.
