I think Linus should do a build log where he ghetto mounts (as usual) a Noctua NH-D15 or some insane cooler on a Titan X or something. I'm interested to see the performance and if he can actually pull off a decent looking rig with a gigantic cooler.

Jesus christ guys, calm down. It's just an idea I had...

So it would cool only the GPU chip and nothing else on the GPU board?

There's a limit to how much kludging one can do before it becomes impractical.

Well that's part of the video, he also figures out a way to cool the VRMs and what not.

Well why don't you do it then?

Because I don't have time or the insane computer parts. If you do, go right on ahead as I'm interested to see. It's Linus' channel after all, and it's just an idea I had for him. No need to be so negative.

I have no interest in wasting time or money to satiate someone's childish curiosity.  While the idea of mounting a gigantic CPU cooler on a GPU might sound like a good idea, for all practical purposes it's completely stupid.

A CPU cooler is designed to cover one thing and one thing only: the CPU die cover to draw away the heat generated.  As you said, on a GPU card like a Titan X the stock cooling or third party cooling systems like EVGA's ACX 2.0 are designed to draw heat away not just from the GPU chip, but also the VRM's and other components. So unless one designs custom heat pipes to cover those parts also and find a way to attach them to a CPU cooler, the cooling system will be less effective than a proper GPU cooler.

Why so negative?

Quite often people mistake practicality with negativity.  I'm giving a practical answer.

If have seen this idea be done and it works (sorry don't have like at this time because I am on my phone)

Specs: CPU: I5 6600K (4.5 GHZ), GPU: RX 480 (stock), Mobo: MSI Z170A tomahawk AC, RAM: Corsair 16GB drr4 2600, CASE: NZXT S340, storage 240GB crusial SSD and a 1TB WD HHD

Not on the same scale. GPU cooling is more complex as you have to worry about the whole GPU board including VRMs and the chip itself.

I know, I've had my fair share of GPU cooling experience.

You think Linus is practical? It's not meant to be practical, it's to show what's possible.

You never know, Linus is pretty crazy.

You do realise that the whole impractical and craziness may just be a character and for the video, right?

A 4170 to match a R9 290? Nice bottlenecks m8. Also bad video idea, no point to it, no one is going to sponsor that

No bottleneck here, at least in most games (ARMA is the exception but that shits on CPUs anyways, even my friend's 4690K bottlenecks his 970 in that game). And it's just an idea, I don't see why everyone has to take it out on me, I guess everyone synchronized their periods today or something.
