How do I stop this?

So I came back from holiday and started up steam and this...

 

 

I tried to pin the new icon to the taskbar but I can't, I also re-pinned steam.exe but it still happens.

Any help is appreciated, this is driving me mad.

You can just re install Steam, i think it stops then

If you download a small file it will overwrite the icon status and completely reset the icon afterwards.

Are you talking about the two icons, or that its showing a part download?

 

If its the first point then unpin the icon that is not being used and pin the icon that is being used. I've found that if you pin a shortcut to the taskbar then this happens, but if you pin the program when it is running you get the desired effect.

That happens to me sometimes. Are you sure you don't have any paused downloads?

Just to clarify I'm talking about having steam open in a new taskbar icon thiny, I just happened to be downloading something.

Make a copy of the steam.exe from the steam folder.

 

Drag the shortcut to the taskbar and it's now pinned and should work as normal.

If you meant make a shortcut that doesn't work, and neither does making a copy.

Strange. My steam.exe is pinned to the taskbar and does not make a copy when running.

 

You could try reinstalling steam.

Okay, I deleted everything apart from steamapps, userdata and steam.exe, killed the existing steam.exe (which was still running) and ran it again, it setup again and it is fixed!
