Opinions for my build (Gaming & Rendering PC)

FRXxFreeze

Greetings,

First of all, I'm sorry for my bad English (especially grammar)

I want to build my 1st PC, I'm going to use it for my college (Architecture Studies), so i need a PC capable for rendering 3D (ex. 3ds Max, SketchUp, AutoCad), editing photo (ex. Photoshop) and gaming (ex. Minecraft, GTA V, and CSGO).

For gaming, i only use 1080p and single monitor, medium/high texture quality is enough for me and for minecraft, i will install some mods.

I don't want to overclock anything

Here is my build plan

Question:

1. Is this spec "Future-proof" for about 4/5 years? I don't mind to play next-gen game in low settings

2. Is Intel Xeon okay? Because Xeon E3-1231 is similar to i7-4770 for lower price and newer. My second option for CPU is i5-4690k

3. Does 4gb VRAM "overkill"? and is MSI better than Asus (GTX 960 directcu ii oc 4gb ddr5 strix)?

4. Do 2 stock case fans enough?

5. Do i have to buy aftermarket CPU cooling? Cooler Master Blizzard T2 Mini seems good for me

I don't mind to add for about 20-50 dollars

Thanks for your help

1. Probably, if you don't mind playing on Low

2. I'm no expert on Xeon chips but I think so.

3. 4GB VRAM is not overkill :P

4. 1 intake and 1 out-take should be fine.

5. If you're not overclocking, no aftermarket CPU cooler is needed, however I find you should buy one because they look sexier.

Personally I feel that this would perform better, stock case fans also do a good enough job. If you really need a cd righter you can put that in but it's not really required. I chose watercooling because the cpu is quite hot running. And the r9 380X is powerful enough for now.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor  ($319.99 @ Micro Center)

Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 380X 4GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card  ($219.99 @ Newegg)

3. But what brand should i choose? MSI or Asus? (IMO MSI is sexier)

Get a WD Blue or Green Drive and a better GPU. Get some opinions on that PSU....

I already had an external HDD 1TB, but yeah, i think i will add another HDD when mine is full

GTX 970 cost $100 more, i don't know much about AMD's. and from this thread: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/7766-diy-pc/, it's recommended to use NVidia for Photoshop use

Well, first i chose Corsair VS650, but it has no 80+ Certificate, a shop assistant told me to chose CX series (80+ Bronze) or Taiwanese brand called Super Flower (80+ Silver). They both got same price but i'm afraid for choosing a strange brand for PSU

yeah, i think it will perform better too, but you forgot to add the monitor and OS

It's touch screen monitor, because i think it will be easier for design (with stylus)

Asus is the 'better' brand, but MSI is sexier (IMO) and I have a Mobo + GPU from them, they have been stepping their game up recently. So if it looks better in your case go for that, but Asus is the more well-known for high build quality.

Everything on the US is much cheaper <_<

Here in Indonesia, some parts are more expensive

The mobo cost $124 (just $10 cheaper than my build) and Gskill's RAM cost $50. Your build's total price in here is about $1624 (Mine is about $1469)

But it's okay, i will think about some parts, especially the radeon 390

Thanks

I think u should go for Asus . They have been outstanding !!!!!

-For ur GPU 4GB is enough for now.

-For ur cpu cooler I think u should get a corsair H100i water cooler .

-4 fans will do the trick , that is 2 on the cpu cooler , 1 at the back and one at the top

Unless you want a super quiet PC, don't get an aftermarket cooler with a locked CPU.

I was just looking for the cheapest parts there :P Here's the bare minimum of what your PC should have:

  • Xeon E3-1231
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 250 GB SSD
  • R9 390
  • Seasonic, XFX, EVGA G2/GS, or Antec HCG Power Supply

If u won't do any overclock then u can get an aftermarket cpu heatsink or get the V8 cooler master for about 69 bucks
