A friend of mine is switching from an old Pentium Exxx to a Q6600.Will he need to reinstall windows or not?

I always thought you did. Only a new mobos require OS reinstall? Am I right?

With Windows 10 yes, but previous windows installations I don't think so. Pretty sure as long as you kept the same hard drive you could use the same windows install every time. Windows 10 however binds to the motherboard.
