Astronomy question

Hello,

 

For a project I'm doing I need the distances from the sun of several things in space (Large Magellanic Cloud, Sirius, etc.). 

Is there a large academically reputable database or something for this sort of thing?

This forum is likely not the place to ask a question like that... I debut there are many here that will be capable of answering your question.

cloudynights or Star Gazers Lounge (SGL) are your best bets for getting good info on something that specific. SGL is mainly UK based but still international. cloudynights is more USA/Candada based.

 

Alternatively, try looking it on Wikipedia and finding its source for the distance. That may help you.

 

Or, perhaps speek to the people who make Stellarium (planetariam software) as many stars in that program have distances they may know where to find the information.

Many, if not all, distances are approximate and cannot be 100% accurately be determined (even with the most accurate of calculations done by intense scientific study, there is still quite the margin of error).

 

I might be able to help if I had a list of what distances you need (and I can probably also provide a source)

Been active in an Astronomy-centric foundation for the better part of my life, so I may be able to answer many if not most questions either from personal knowledge of after consulting my seniors (many of which are full-blown scientists)

150,000,000 Km to the earth! or 1AU, Other things are much further...

 

Although I assume that over time those distances will change as from the sun to e.g: Andromeda will change as the sun orbits a point and is therefore not stationary.
