So I feel like I have some problems with my home network..

BACKGROUND INFO.

The Setup is as follows: I have Broadband Internet that comes in, into a Motorola Cable Modem(SB5101U). Then from the Modem it goes into a Cisco Router(WRT160N), from this router it goes out to another Cisco Router(E1200v2) to provide Wireless signal out in the Garage. Going back to the (WRT160N) from there I have a 50ft Cat5 Ethernet cable running up to my room, that I plug into my PS4.

PROBLEM.

I have many problems trying to view my friends' list, and party's and what not, the main error code saying stuff like, "DNS Error" etc. and spitting out some code to help talk to Sony Reps. This regularly occurs like about every 3-5 hours. Constantly making me reset my Internet, and PS4. [(Usually when I reset the Internet it 'fixes' itself.) However it occasionally takes more than one time.]

OBJECTIVE.

I'm looking to figure out if there's something better I can do, maybe I should get newer equipment? I don't know that's why I'm here. Or maybe to get some help on fixing things that are in the settings, or possibly calling my Internet Provider asking them to check things? I'm unsure. And I am hardly even a beginner yet to this all, so I'm just trying to learn as much as I can to fix it, and to help others myself...

Thank you so much,

Have a good day.

Is the second router in the garage set up in Access Point Mode?

Have you done a hard reset of the WRT160N, and reconfigured? (In your situation, it shouldn't need any configuration).

No and no, what would I need to do for both those solutions?

You may just try turning off the second router for now and see if that helps. If you don't need to, no reason to reset you main router. If both are in "router mode", you will have two gateways on the same network, competing for use. This will result in loops, delays, dns problems,  etc.

For the first one, you will likely need to refer to the manual. You generally log into the router, and then under a settings menu, there should be an option for "mode". Usually the options are Router, Repeater, Access Point.

After configuring to that mode, you may need to plug the ethernet into one of the 4 standard LAN ports, rather than the single WAN port.

For the second:

1. when the unit is powered on, hold down its reset button for 30 seconds

2. while still holding down the reset button, unplug the router from power and hold for an additional 30 seconds

3. still holding down the reset button, turn on power to the router again (plug it in) and hold for 30 more seconds

This will generally completely reset the router to default settings. In many cases, it will now automatically configure itself for internet. If not, you may need to turn off both the modem and router, and then first turn on the modem and wait for it to fully turn on (2 minutes or so), and then turn on the router.

Here is the manual: http://downloads.linksys.com/downloads/userguide/E_Series_UG_E900Rev_3425-01486_Web.pdf

In the manual, page 36 (PDF Page 48) it explains how to set up in access point mode.
