r9 380 weird core clocks

Hello fellas,
Bought myself an R9 380 4gb nitro by sapphire, first thing I wanted to do is to OC the shit outta this card.
Set clocks, ran Valley benchmark aaaand..
Core clock runs between 800-900mhz, shown in GPU-Z and afterburner's OSD

SO my question is WTF is happening

Warranty this crap, or is this normal?

Then you must not be hitting 100% GPU usage. Or you're not hitting peak clock speed. Where do you have the clock speed set to? What voltage?

OH! And make sure you don't have the fps capped! I did that once and got the same thing

Then you must not be hitting 100% GPU usage. Or you're not hitting peak clock speed. Where do you have the clock speed set to? What voltage?

Voltage cannot be changed in MSI afterburner, changed it in Trixx tho, but max core clock was 1028 (despite me OC'ing this to 1150)

In Trixx the voltage was set to +100mv, then to +150, it didnt help

GPU usage is at 99% sometimes 100%, but i guess 99% is a normal reading

Yeah some thing is keeping it from hitting the max clock speed. Ether the PSU, CPU, ram, fps lock, etc.

If something is keeping it from hitting max clock speed, its most likely the PSU but it's impossble. This PSU is sufficient for the card

I aswell doubt that 4690k is bottlenecking an r9 380

I had a GTX 970 and it wasnt bottlenecked by anything

maybe this particular card is just fucked up, if nobody has any idea what is happening

I noticed it sometimes hits the desired core clock but not for long, it gets downclocked right away

Yeah that's messed up. That PSU and CPU shouldn't hold it back. Check your global settings in Crimson. And in the game profile for Valley to double check you don't have a fps cap. Then I'd contact Sapphire.

IMO - Max Power limit should always be set when you wanna maintain your highest clocks in game without declocking sooner.

 

In lighter titles its fine @ 0% or even a negative, but games you WANT full performance, set +20 or higher if allowed

(Some are +50, some cards are only +20) and I can't remember if the 380 is a +20 or +50 type...

Which should be the case in Extreme HD in Valley. Have you tried searching for what others have reached OCing the 380? Maybe you are at the limit of the GPU already in terms of core? Each GPU even if from the same batch will differ in OC capability. Its the Silicon Lottery. Plus that GPU is already factory OCed.

 

Have you tried running Valley on stock? Does it reach the 985 MHz out of the box?

For everyone interested, I fixed the problem, yay! (more like the problem fixed itself)

I had +100mV in trixx and it seems like this was causing the problem. The card hit its power limit and started downclocking itself. Everything works perfectly fine with +50mv, 1150 core 1600 ram

Good to hear. Trixx is a good program but I switched to Afterburner after I almost RMA'd my 290 when Trixx and Crimson caused a memory issue. But I do like the look of Trixx better than Afterburner.
