What happens if I upgrade my CPU?

WhatisTechnology
Go to solution Solved by Rune,

Be careful of the ones that have black hole generators pre-installed. Usually those are marked with a 'k' in the SKU for kinetic emissions.

Christmas sales are near! and just as the title says what happens if I upgrade my CPU? (i3-4170 to a i5-4590)

Will -

I lose my data just like if I were to install a new OS?

Will my computer not even turn on?

Thank you!

You will be fine, as long as you use the cooler that came with the CPU.

Nothing should happen. CPUs don't have drivers so your Windows installation will be fine. The only thing that will happen is increased performance :D

I cant use a more quiet after market cooler? Why do I have to use the stock cooler?

Well, you can use a 3RD-Party cooler, as long as you use thermal compound.

You did not state that you had a 3RD-Party cooler in the OP, and I just wanted to make sure you didn't forget the thermal compound.

So a i5-4590 or i5-4460 would be fine? Correct? (It will fit in my mobo and is upgrading from an i3-4170)

Check your motherboard specs first and see if it can handle the processor you want.
