R9 380x vs. GTX 780 ( almost same price)

bobango

Hey all. :)

I am looking to get a GPU and I am wondering between these two cards. I would use them for 1080p gaming. What I want is to be able to get around 60 fps on high-demanding games on ultra or high quality. Also, I would like to have the future in mind, however, I am not very knowledgable about how support for those cards, actually, support for the gtx 780 will do in the next 1-2 years. I have stopped at those cards, as 960 and 380 are at almost the same price, and 390 and 970 are quite more expensive. Here are the prices from the shops that are available to me.

All the prices are for brand new cards.

R9 380x  ~250 euros
GTX 780 ~ 250 euros
R9 380 ~ 190 - 240 euros

GTX 960 ~ 200 - 240 euros
R9 390 ~340 euros
R9 970 ~ 340 euros

(there are no bargains on older GPUs)

The two exact models I am choosing between are:

and

http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/474470/sapphire-nitro-r9-380x-4g-d5.html

At this moment my preference is towards the GTX 780 , however, I have my doubts about how well it is going to be supported in the future, both from nvidia and game developers, and the fact that is it also older than the just-released 380x.

I would appreciate your advice and insights on which one do you think is the better choice.

780 is a bit better but with modern games the 380X might pull ahead simply because Nvidia are forsaking Kepler.

EDIT: 380X Nitro vs reference 780 - the best 380X vs the worst 780 - get the 380X for cooler operation, less noise, less power draw and superior OCing

The 780 competes with the 290/290x, so having the prices of those gpus will help. If I were to choose, I would go with the 780, because of the overclocking headroom (depends on the cooler)

780 does not compete with the 290x, its on the 290 level,  780/290< 970/390<290x/390x/980 and so on

The 780 is faster, however if you can find an r9 290 for cheaper go for that.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

The 780 is with a reference cooler.

Reference cooler means it WILL thermal throttle to base frequency - Kepler runs hot

Thanks for all the replies. My toughts got clearer. Another option is to go for a used 280x (there are a couple of good offers) for around 150 euros, as from benchmarks it performs almost the same, sometimes even better than the 380x, and it would be around 100 euros cheaper. As it seems as the 780 is not much faster than the 380x, and 280x, and considering the reference cooler and the decreasing support for nvidia, the 280x and 380x are the viable options. However, I am not sure if the extra 100 euros for the 380x are worth it for some extra warranty and future-proofing in the sense that the 280x would cost only at around 150 euros, and I could easily change it in the future - is not a big commitment and it should perform the same as the 380x for the time being, and maybe a bit in the future. Do you have any thoughts on this idea?
