$2500 AMD vs Intel

19eightysix

First off been a long time viewer of tech tips. I've built 4 PC's over the period of about 10 years and have had decent success, up until my last build. Long story short had some compatibility issues, fried a bunch of RAM. I don't claim to know a lot about tech or builds but I tried to consume as much knowledge as I can. My previous builds have all been Intel, but since my last build (probably no fault of intel) has left a bad taste in my mouth I have been leaning towards an AMD build. I currently use a Asus g75 RoG laptop.

PC uses will be mostly gaming, Arma 3, Ark, Division (if it ever comes out) and some other misc games. Some rendering, streaming and everyday use.

The builds I have done I've tried to stay in the $2500 range without windows

The AMD build:

CPU: AMD FX-9590 4.7GHz 8-Core OEM/Tray Processor  ($274.98 @ NCIX)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool CAPTAIN 240 91.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($105.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($298.05 @ Vuugo)
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory  ($145.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($198.21 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB Video Card (2-Way CrossFire)  ($548.01 @ Vuugo)
Video Card: MSI Radeon R9 390X 8GB Video Card (2-Way CrossFire)  ($548.01 @ Vuugo)
Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($129.88 @ Canada Computers)
Power Supply: Corsair Professional 1200W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($293.98 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $2543.08

The Intel Build:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($428.98 @ DirectCanada)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($121.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Formula ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($391.25 @ Vuugo)
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2666 Memory  ($195.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($198.21 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB STRIX Video Card  ($907.18 @ DirectCanada)
Case: Thermaltake Commander G42 ATX Mid Tower Case  ($79.90 @ shopRBC)
Power Supply: Corsair RM 1000W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($189.88 @ Canada Computers)
Total: $2513.37

Keep in mind these are Canadian prices and well our dollar is in the tank right now. Would appreciate any feedback. looking for a 5 year PC minimum that has potential to be upgraded with the market.

The Intel build.

Though, calm down the PSU. 850W is enough even for a 980ti SLI.

I used to be quite active here.

The FX-9590 is probably one of the worst cpu's you could buy.

wanted to leave it a little high in case I decided to purchase more RAM 1000w might be alittle to much, would like to stay with corsair though

More RAM. Really. More RAM would increase the usage by 1-2 watts...

according to PC part picker its more like 25 watts. If that is accurate. As i said though i want to have the ability to upgrade in the future

The intel build with a FuryX if your planning on high res.

You say that but a fair few benchmarks seems to show a non-ref 980ti beating a Fury X at 1440p>

Even if you do upgrade a 650W PSU would be fine unless you xfire/SLI in the future.

Any i7 is better then any AMD cpu. PLUS I believe (Linus mentioned it once) AMD cpu's only support PCI-E 2.0 and not 3.0. Intel has better higher grade processors. Any pricey build should use Intel

Both are heaters.  The 4790k is one of the hotter Intels, but the 9590 is a factory oced factory oc.

The 4790K is 88W TDP. The 9590 is 220W TDP. It isn't even close.

although the AMD build will give more performance...it's not worth it

the heat will be enormous, you will have dual gpu problems

The Intel build is much more stable, and it's more than enough at this time

INTEL

the amd build is a heater, gad damn

the AMD build will keep him warm during long winter nights though... :P

any intel i5 or i7 paired with a 980ti will slap bitch pretty much anything AMD you can trow at it...unless you go with dual AMD cards and game at 4K...which i REALLY don't recommend.

Sinlge 980ti...fast 1440p IPS monitor = WIN! (i know i own this kit, it's AMAZINGLY FLAWLESS across the board...never had such an EPIC gaming experience, EVER)

no it's not...not even close, especially when it comes to gaming where the intel CPU has nearly TWICE as strong per core performance...(IPC, remember?!)

in fact, core i3 haswell are pretty darn close to FX-9590 in MANY games.

I was talking about CPU intensive tasks like rendering not simple gaming where even my 8350 gets over 60 fps in every single game

AMD is the "I'm desperate for a powerful computer" manufacturer. Intel is the "I can afford a powerful computer" manufacturer.
