Hi Guys,

It's now been about 3 years since I built my PC, and I'm totally out of the loop in terms of being up to date with knowing the latest and greatest hardware and stuff, so I'll need help speccing out some new components for my PC. I was doing some video editing recently, and I maxed out my CPU, causing work to become very tedious and difficult. I also do a lot of audio editing, and the more plugins I buy, the faster my PC can't keep up with them.

So these are the specs I'm coming from:

Intel i5 2500K

Asrock Z77 Extreme4

8 gigs of value RAM

Samsung 840 120GB SSD

MSI GTX 760

A bunch of mechanical hard drives

CM Storm Enforcer Case

I'd like to upgrade to a CPU with hyperthreading this time around, if it's still how it used to work, I guess that means an i7 of some description. I think I could go for a non-K CPU, as I'd like to save a few bob and I also don't care to overclock. That will mean new motherboard, too. At the same time, I want to downsize to a Corsair Air 240, so mATX is the way forward. I'll be keeping my GPU the same, so it's pretty much just the CPU and mobo I need help with. In terms of I/O on the mobo, if there's a motherboard option with a tonne of USB ports, that would be great!

Thanks for your help and please ask if you need more specifics :)

*edit* Budget would be nice to keep under 500 GBP, under 400 preferred for just the mobio and CPU

Hi Guys,

So something like this then? I wouldn't spend the money on skylake unless you really want USB 3.1 with an i7 6700(non K)

If you were to spend everything on your CPU you could get a 5820K for just over 500

i7 is only option to go. And if you go skylake the i7-6700k is the only option.

If you are ok with haswell the i7-4790 is a good option and if you want to go even further than that you can get a 5820k.

I think the i7-4790 is probably the best option, especially if you want to keep the memory.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

Thanks for your help! I'm good without the SSD, so that'll knock 114 squids off the price :) Are the Xeon and the 5820K the same socket then?

Yeah, I think I'm good skipping the skylake bus. Looks like the 4790 and 5820K will be the two to weigh up in terms of how much I want to spend! Thanks! :)

No they are not. The xeon going to perform like a stock clock I7 anyway, you'll be fine with it.

Just OC the CPU and switch to a GTX 970/R9 390

Audio editing is really my focus, which doesn't benefit from GPU acceleration. That aside, I've had by 2500K overclocked, and I still maxed it out :/
