So i have a new edifier s550 5.1 surround system and creative soundblaster zxr sound card on order for my birthday from my family and i was just wondering if anyone has heard of this brand edifier before? My dads been in the audio scene for years and knows the big brands however i cant find much on them at all. The one review ive managed to find was very good out performing the old logitech z5500 and the new z906 at every turn, both in clarity and overall sound stage with roughly half the wattage rms rating. Im not exactly an audiophile but i am usually pretty picky about my sound quality... is there anyone that has any experience with this brand at all and maybe suggest i order a z906 instead? or something else in that $400 price point

I've had the s550s for a few months now, for a 5.1 it's awesome!

alright thats promising :) im a little worried connectivity wise i couldnt really find anything on that at all, what is used to hook it up? like is it optical cables or what cause he mentioned in the review getting the 5.1 setup required some special cables or something but didnt say anything other then that.. it was pretty vague

hey reaper,

Are u dead set on 5.1? i've had soooo many different pc speakers and i'll tell u they are mostly trash, even the good ones are overpriced for what your getting.

edifier have a good rep as far as pc speakers go, being more bang for buck than logitechs muddy sound.

my suggestion is, take a bit of time and read up on some powered pc/bookshelf speakers and a sub ( like the audioengine a2's i think). personally i prefer a good set of bookshelves/sub and a T-amp, amazing sound from this rather cheap set up. i built my sister a T-amp combo, $20 dollar amp, $30 bookshelves, $50 sub - the sound from this takes a big dump on any pc speakers ive ever heard.

also consider corsair sp2500, linus and slick rave about them.

Hope  i have been of some help, good luck

in that case i suggest a 5.1 hometheatre package. receiver and speakers can be had for that price, and they will destroy pc speakers.

this is my system

PC > amp/receiver > speaker selector/switch > 5.1 home theater speaker set for watching vids

                                                                       >2 bookshelves and a big sub for music

headphones for gaming

really happy with this

I considered something like that at one point however i have a dedicated theater room for that and dont exactly have the space for multiple speaker setups in my room im working with a relatively odd shaped area and limited space so one speaker setup to be used general will be the best for me, knowing that the edifiers have the ability to be changed to 2.1 for music and other regular use made it seem like the most viable choice in my case, i attached a pic of the space im working with and if you want i can take some more detailed pics and maybe we can figure out what will work best for me and the space im in

omg, dont u get sore eyes?

i can see ur point tho, the switching without a dedicated switch is pretty cool( most home theater receivers can do this too). can see the appeal with the edifiers, lot less hassle.

me personally tho, amp under ur second monitor, sub under the table, center in front of tv and satellites mounted on wall(3M removable hook things).

lol no sore eyes, i turn the tv off when im at the desk usually, its gonna be getting wall mounted basically right above where its sitting now and ill be getting one and possibly two more monitors and have them sitting where the tv is now then ill have a laptop sitting where the current monitor is.. for the way my room is shaped the edifiers seem like a pretty good idea

If no one has answed this question. You will need a 5.1 sound card, if you are talking about this sound card http://www.soundblaster.com/products/sound-blaster-zxr.aspx it should be fine.

The speakers plug into the sub-woofer then, from the sub it goes into the PC via a RCA to 3.5mm adapter.

That sound card uses RCA for the front and uses 3.5mm jacks for the center and back.

Good luck and happy birthday!

More on this note: You can use on-board sound if it has 7.1 output, but if you chose a system with optical input you would need a soundcard to format the audio into one of the formats capable of carrying surround sound over a S/PDIF connection. Few motherboards have been made with this capability, and I don't think that feature really caught on as a selling point.
