The Sapphire R9-390 is the best 970.

I could be wrong, but the backplate isn't very important. Personally, I'd spring for a card with the beefier 6+2 power phase for better overclocking because the 4+1 on some of EVGA cards are quite limited in terms of headroom.

Of course, the usual g1 or msi is better.

i would get the ssc acx 2.0+ as the regular sc has cooling issues.

Strix cause back plate

The Strix is one of the worst 970s...

...anyway OP, EVGA, Gigabyte or MSI are all solid.

I could be wrong, but the backplate isn't very important

backplate is all looks, and because dust cleans off easier.

also, here's my list:

- all rounder: msi or evga depending on looks

- pure power: either a watercooled one, or the gigabyte one with 3 fans. (they have one with 3 fans, right?)

i have an asus strix, and i like it. 99% of the time i dont have more than 50% gpu load, its dead silent, and the fan stopping feature (some other brands have this as well) is a nice to have for someone thats going for 100% silence.

If Sapphire made coolers for Nvidia cards, EVGA would be out of a job :P

well, i actually like evga's looks. i would have gone for an evga 750ti if i bothered upgrading my prebuilt.

the 390 is out of my price bracket.

Unless you are in a country with strange out of the norm pricing, the 390 and 970 cost about the same.

With that being said I don't recommend a 970. An MSI and Sapphire 390 should be what you're primarily looking for, but any 390 will do as long as it's from a reputable company not including Asus.
