High Temps On Gigabyte Gaming G1 980 Ti When On Desktop

Go to solution Solved by Voitokas,

What's your monitor? There is still a uncommon idle bug for specific monitor characteristics that forces much higher than expected idle usage.

http://techreport.com/news/29294/nvidia-will-fix-excessive-gpu-idle-power-use-at-high-refresh-rates

You clock speed also makes me think that, as I idle at 135 mhz core clock.

So yea... update your drivers...

Hello and thanks for coming.

I am a little worried that something is wrong with my GPU, I am having 56-58 Celsius temperatures when I'm just watching YouTube videos or on my desktop. This is really high for what I know. My under load temps are not exceedingly high, something around 65-75 Celsius.

I will provide a text file that shows my GPU statistics. I recorded it with Gigabyte OC Guru II. I have fans set on auto. CPU-Z shows that my core clock is ~595 MHz when in said use.

I have case fans and my other components are really cool.

My full system specs are down below.

CPU: - Intel Core i7-4770k (Watercooled: Antec KÜHLER H2O 950)
MoBo: - Gigabyte Z87-HD3
GPU: - Gigabyte Gaming G1 GTX 980 Ti 6Gb
RAM: - G.Skill RipjawsX 1866MHz 16Gb (2x 8Gb, DDR3)
HDD: - Seagate 2TB Barracuda, SATA-3, 7200Rpm
SSD: - Samsung 840 EVO 256Gb, SATA-3
PSU: - NZXT HALE82 750W Semi-Modular
Case: - NZXT Phantom 410 (Mid Tower) (Limited White and Orange)
OS: - Windows 8.1 64bit

BIOS Version (msinfo32):  American Megatrends Inc. F8, 12.8.2014

All help will be greatly appreciated on solving this "issue".
I will happily answer any questions you need to be answered.
Thank you!

Are the fans turning off at idle on the card?

What about under load? Are the fans turning off at idle on the card?

As you can see from my attached file, they go like a roller coaster. Up and down. They smoothly jump between 1400rpm and 0rpm.

My GPU is 3 months old. My 980 Ti is kind of a new.

Your core clock is to high, it should be 135 MHz and the TDP around 10%. It get's hot because it burn a lot of power.

Do you have a >120 attached?

That'll do it. Try updating your drivers and seeing if it fixes the issue on restart.

Interesting. I will look into this.

Edit: I have all the newest drivers at the moment, so does that mean they will bring new drivers soon or should It be already 100% fixed already?

I ment >120 Hz monitor, sorry.

But it's allready answered.

You can lock the FPS when on desktop to 120 Hz with the Nvidia controll pannel (it get's automatily unlocked to 144 Hz when you start a game).

That's what I do and it works.

Okay, I put my fans on manual 1440 rpm and now my temps are around 40 Celsius, thats more like it. But I still don't get that the temps are 60 when on auto. Weird!

Thank you. I see that when my refresh rate is high my core clock is very high. Thank you guys for help.

I was testing my friend's R7 370, and it would also reach ~60 deg. while idling (on open air), all because it has, like your 980Ti, passive mode that turns off fans to reduce noise. As soon as I turned fans on at 25% temp went down to ~40 deg.
