Hi everyone I am new to this forum

I have an Intel Core i5 3570k on an ASRock Z77 Extreme4

I am not very good with overclocking, mainly because you have to do it yourself to become knowledgable.

I want to overclock my i5 3570k

Previously I used a software from ASRock that overclocked it but I got tired of having to start it up every time I open my PC to get the overclock going

I never changed the voltages. I know anything over 1.4V will kill the CPU.

I was running 4.2ghz stable at stock voltage with the software (not sure if that's good or not, it was 1V about, sometimes dipped to 0.9V)

Now that I am in the BIOS, I have absolutely no idea what to do. I need some clarification. I trust you guys since I watch Linus' awesome videos.

First of all I want to know what this BCLK is and what it is for and how to use it (I have a feeling this is for extreme overclockers because I only see people that have achieved 5-8ghz change this setting)

Second of all I want to know what this VCore is what it is for and how to use it

and last of all I want to know if there is anything else I should know about overclocking before changing the CPU ratio

I greatly appreciate your answers and I am eager to read them!

the vcore is the main voltage, you only need to change this if you run into an unstable overclock, then you have to raise it. a voltage above 1,4 volts does not kill the cpu, you just have to make sure you have proper cooling(h100I, custom water loop). 1.4 volts will run hot. and i suggest keeping the temperatures under 75 c

The BCLK is the base clock. That is what determins what the multiplier multiplies. For a new comer i won't recommed changing that. it also changes the RAM speeds, so it puts to many variables into it.

The VCore is the voltage that the motherboard sends into the CPU. Thereby also raising the tempratures.

You can overclock as follows:

  • Raise multiplier by 1
  • Stress test with Prime95 for 1-2 hours
  • Repeat until it become unstable (Freezes or BSod)
  • Raise voltage by 0.05 untill you get stability
  • Repeat untill you hit 75-80C on the hottest core
  • Stress test for 24-48 hours to check for 100% stability

Since you say you ran 4.2Ghz at stock VCore that is a good place to start. Just don't let the VCore stay at Auto

Edit: This is a very basic guide. if you want to get more advanced just ask
