The only Xeons that cost an insane amount (for a consumer) are those made for enterprise, such as the 2698/99, which are $4000. When Skylake E5/E7 lands and vector widths double, frankly that's a perfectly fair price to ask for.

 

If you're buying the wrong tool for your workload, then yes, it looks like a lot of money.
