I started with software and decided I wanted to go with openmediavault as I am already familiar with linux. Based off of other builds this is a list I came up with

PSU: $109.99 be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 600W
CPU: $49.99 Intel G3258 3.2 GHz LGA1150
Motherboard: $117 GIGABYTE GA-H97N-WIFI LGA 1150
Ram: $34.99 Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Case: $61.43 Fractal Design Node 304 Mini ITX Hybrid
Media Storage: $479.98 2x WD Red 6TB IntelliPower
OS Storage: $36.99 OCZ Storage Solutions Trion 100 Series 120GB
Total: $890.37
With Tax: $943.79

However since then my brother offered me a i3-530 however I am having trouble finding a mini/micro board to fit it, was hoping I could save a little bit of money. Or perhaps there is another area I could save money? I am just using this system for media storage, mysql server and possibly torrent client. Open to any advise.

I wouldnt pick the I3 for a few reasons:

you really don need a high performance CPU with this, and the I3 will get hotter.

I would pick a AMD APU, it has an integrated graphics chip to use with a monitor, low TDP, and a low price.

appreciate the feed back.

The mb/cpu/ram combo is much cheaper, thank you.

I do have a few questions
I was curious why the core 1500 over the node 304? I only ask because I saw the 304 getting talked about a lot.

Is the OCZ something I should stay away from why the patriot? I ask because it is double the price.

Also from a noob perspective the liquid cooled cooler seems overkill, is this going to be necessary?

I think liquid cooling such a low spec AMD CPU is massively overkill. Hell, I don't even liquid cool my 8350. The stock cooler would be fine, considering it lasted my 8350 a while.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well looks good so far, the system booted so I must've done something right, I am currently Installing OpenMediaVault.

I took recommendations from many places and ended up with this:

Case: Node 804 (turns out microcenter had it labeled wrong and the node 304 itx as the name implies only accept itx boards, so 8 bay 804 it was)

PSU: be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 600W (I got told many times I won't regret a modular psu, so I tried it out and agree it was a good idea)

CPU: AMD Dual-Core A4-Series APU for Desktops A4-4000

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-HD3

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (The CPU/MB/Ram combo recommended above, OMV just booted on it with no problems, can't ask for more)

Media Storage: 2x  6TB WD Red (I found the price per TB wasn't too much more and worth the possibility of expansion later on)

OS Storage: OCZ Trion 100 120gb (Cheapest ssd i could find)

Now I just need to figure out how to make this OMV work lol. Thanks for all the info and recommendations.

That's a cool little build. Good to see you went with WD Reds. Are you going to RAID your 2 HDDs for redundancy?

Hey there Ohhwataloser,

The build looks very good! I would stick to the WD Red drives or NAS/RAID-class drives in general for better reliability and less chance of corrupted data and drive dropouts. I'd say that the PSU is a major overkill along with the motherboard and you could save quite a bit with a less-expensive options. Everything else looks perfectly fine :)

Hit me up if you have any questions!

MB was 55 bucks, I'm not sure where I could of gone cheaper. the PSU I wanted modular given the amount of people who suggested it, but yes could of save some money there. Currently I am just trying to figure out this software, Im about to forget all their plugin stuff and just install the mysql database in debian itself lol.

Apologies, you have listed different prices in your OP.
What level of redundancy are you looking for? I see that you are done transferring data to one of the drives. Have in mind that not all types of RAID are expandable and you might need to reformat the drive with the data once you start to include it in a RAID array.
Calling the support of the OS or posting in their dedicated forum might provide you with some very useful info and advice. :)

Hope everyone had a good holiday. Just wanted to update I have mysql working now, I gave up on the omv plugin and just used the debain package directly. Still havn't tried the own cloud yet to remotely connect, but I been streaming content on the local network from the nas system all through the holidays. But i wanted to update if someone is looking for the same thing I was, which was a cheap(ish) build that gave me zero hardware related issues and room to expand. This worked for me

Case: Node 804 - It gives 8 3.5" storage bays, but there are tons of cases to choose from to fit your needs.

PSU: be quiet! STRAIGHT POWER 10 600W I'm sure you can find something cheaper than this, I would make sure it is at least 80 plus rated and suggest modular to make life easier building it, but not necessary.

CPU: AMD Dual-Core A4-Series APU for Desktops A4-4000

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-F2A88XM-HD3

Ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB

Media Storage: This is something you need to buy to fit your needs.

OS Storage: Get the cheapest ssd that will fit your os and addons

thanks for all the help and advise
