SSD randomly defragging

DavePC
Go to solution Solved by MG2R,

Hey Guys,

I'm having an issue where my SSD randomly defrags, but only by like 1%. I have auto defrag off, so I don't know what is going on.

SSD is an Samsung 830, latest firmware. Any help would be awesome.

I think you're misreading the report: it says your SSD is 1% FRAGMENTED, not DEfragmented ;)

Windows7 and higher should be able to detect SSDs and turn off defragging for them

Honestly, I have no idea when it happens. It just happens randomly, out of nowhere.

And even when it happens, its only for like a few seconds and only 1% is complete, and slowly builds up. I think it goes to maximum of 10% and than resets.

Download Defraggler, Windows will automatically defrag your SSD.

You're not supposed to defrag a SSD it deletes their lifespan.

SSD's do not need defragging.

I know I was simply providing a better alternative and stating that Windows automatically defrags SSDs.

do you guys not get my question

Windows is automatically defragging my SSD, and I don't know why its doing this.

Defraggler takes way too long on my HDD, takes like a day or something lol

and auto defrag is off, if you look on the screenshot

Actually, it says "Last run Aug, 24, 2013". The SSD has been defraged by windows.

...Speaking of which, I pulled up my Disk Defragmenter. Windows automatically detected my C:\ SSD, but it's been defraging my other 256Gb M4 for a couple months. Never bothered to check x.X

Was this a clean install of Windows or a clone from a mechanical drive?

Even still, he should disable it if the de-fragmenting is in somewhere in the start-up, or maybe checking his registry.

I have Windows 7, after install it was set to defrag my SSD, it never got around to doing it

but far as I know it didn't appear to know the difference and likely would have had I not

disabled it.

Safest bet is to manually disable defraging of your SSD drives

even all your HDD's,  Windows defrag is garbage.

Assuming you're on W7

1. Go to your start button and search "services" (should look like cogs icon)

2. Go down the list til you find "Disk Defragmenter". Right click and open properties.

3. If it is running then press Stop, otherwise under "startup type" select "Manual" and apply.

4. May require a restart

Shouldn't get any random defrags happening unless you do it manually.

There are a number of things you can do to optimize your SSD life but I guess I'll save them for another post or until someone asks so I don't hijack.

Hope this helps
