SSD randomly defragging

Go to solution Solved by MG2R,

Hey Guys,

I'm having an issue where my SSD randomly defrags, but only by like 1%. I have auto defrag off, so I don't know what is going on.

SSD is an Samsung 830, latest firmware. Any help would be awesome.

I think you're misreading the report: it says your SSD is 1% FRAGMENTED, not DEfragmented ;)

Windows7 and higher should be able to detect SSDs and turn off defragging for them

Hey,

This is a fresh install, and @Justin manual is already applied.

Thanks for the help regardless.

Yep, Windows 7 defrags SSDs without telling you by default. You seem to have disabled it, so if it keeping going I don't know what to say. If it was me I'd rename the files for the defrag service and not worry about it, but that's not the cleanest way to do things. I strongly suggest against Windows defrag anyway, it's crap. AusLogics Disk Defrag works wonderfully to get HDDs running fast again, even when windows says they're fine. I wouldn't use software to manage an SSD.

Windows 8 uses "Optimize" for all drives, which is a normal defrag for HDDs, and forcing TRIM for SSDs. It even says "Trimming" when you Optimize them.

On a side note, does anybody know how to un-defrag an SSD? I forgot to disable it on my brother's Windows 7 rig, and sure enough...

That's not how it works. You won't undo any 'damage' to the SSD by fragmenting it again. Defragging an SSD is adviced against because defragging storage means moving a lot of files and thus performing a lot of write operations, which may shorten the lifespan of the SSD in question. Once you've defragged it, the writes are done and cannot be undone. Even if you found a program that puts all the files back as they were before the defrag, it would just do as much damage on it's own as the defrag itself did.

Don't worry too much about it. It's not like a single defrag destroys your SSD...

Although I agree with you, you could've left out all the swearing ;)

Yes I could have, I may get a warning post but it is getting very annoying and I am getting very annoyed, that might be why I can't stick to one forum to a long period the people start to annoy me. I am seeing it more and more people are getting to lazy and think they are being helpful even though they are posting things that make absolute no difference because it wasn't asked or required.

Glad your question was answered, I agree with the best choice you picked. Hope things go better for you and you get answers you need instead of people saying things that don't help at all.
