Hey,

One of my friends has ordered a Macbook pro recently for his studies.

His model is only like the base amount of stoage (150gb or something)

Is it possible to upgrade the storage size? What storage do they use? would it be like an M.2 SSD?

Thanks.

that mbp has an optical drive in it. I would bet none of that applies to a modern one.

In fact, I'm fairly certain the modern ones use m.2 ssds.

I don't really blame them, external drives are cheap and not having it allows for more battery. My issues with the mbp are elsewhere.

i feel like the external drive stuff is a cheap lie to do less effort. especially in laptops.

i saw someone on the train with a macbook a while back. behind the macbook was a big external HDD, appareantly for the guy's series he was watching.

while advertising for mobility is great, apple seems to forget people may need that mobility to include storage. and honestly, i'd rather have a bit more bulky laptop with the "accessories" built in, instead of having a cobweb of tech on the go.

and i'm at the point where i dont really want any laptop manufacturer anymore. i liked samsung, they quit, acer is bad, lenovo is bad, dell is bad, hp is bad, toshiba is bad, etc.

Yes, macbook pro has no m.2 ssd, its a propietary connector that gives PCIE speeds, so your best option is going on ebay and get the ssd on the size you need, replacing it is easy just follow the ifixit guide. By the way, the ram is soldered, so you cant upgrade that, theres not a lot to upgrade on new macs

Which specific model of Macbook Pro, which year?  Non Retina Macbook Pros used standard 2.5" SATA drives.  Early generation Retina Macbook Pros used proprietary SATA connections.  The latest generation of Retina Macbook Pros use proprietary PCIe connections.

So your friend needs to check which specific model he is getting before making an upgrade.  Additionally make sure he has ordered a "Macbook Pro" and not a "the New Macbook" which is the one that is like a redesign Macbook Air.

No, I really do see why you wouldn't want an optical drive in there. It takes up a huge amount of space. In a 13" laptop, it's better not to have it in favour of a larger battery and potentially better hardware

I wasn't talking about the "macbook" macbook, just the pro. The "standard" macbook is pure garbage. Lenovo used to be great, they aren't quite as good now though.

That does not look very M.2 to me.

To me it looks the same, but it may be proprietary electrically.

The key (notch) on the MacBook's SSD is like rather near to the middle of the connectors, whereas if you take a look at a standard M.2's key, it is much nearer to either end of the connector.
