Hi all,

I just received my HD 598s and they absolutely phenomenal when it comes to music and positional sound in gaming. I accidentally played everything at max volume when it was plugged in. It raised a question for as to whether or not this could cause damage to the headphones not necessarily in the one instance but in the future. What precautions should I take to make sure nothing is damaged now and in the future? Sounds like I'm paranoid but I want to be responsible with such a fine set of headphones. Thanks much.

I'd be more worry about ear damage than the headphones...

Even at max volume it wasn't THAT loud but still curious.

It's unlikely to harmed the headphones, if the drivers were blown it would be very noticeable. Long terms, well... let's just say you'll likely harm your hearing listening at deafening level than the headphones.

Nope, they are built to do that, they will only break if you somehow get above what is the highest you can currently select.

My current build - Ever Changing.

Ok good because the sound is still great I'm just a bit OCD that way.

Alright thanks man that is very reassuring.

It's onboard sound right now. Waiting on my FiiO e10k to arrive.

Honestly I'd be more worried about hearing damage long before damage to headphones were to occur.

I don't even think a fiio e10k could blow those headphones.

I've got a pair or headphones that have a 2 watt max, and I put about 8 watts through them at one point, on accident. It was ridiculously loud, but the headphones are totally fine. Basically, just don't do it for extended periods of time.

If you connected them to a speaker amp, you could probably blow them

You could blow just about any headphone on a speaker amp, considering that many speaker amps are capable of hundreds, if not thousands of amps. (case and point: most he-6 ever.)

A friend of mine blew up his IEM's just by plugging it to a speaker amp with the source turned off... Are speakers amps that dangerous? Or he must've done something to his IEM's prior to plugging it in?

Even if the source is turned off but the amp is on? Like, can speaker amps kill headphones and IEMs even with the source turned off or not even plugged at all?

The capacitors discharging is probably what caused that or when he plugged them in he shorted the connection.

you can get them into the tens of thousands of kilowatts.

Even if the source is turned off but the amp is on?

Possibly

Possibly

Then I guess the HE-6 is an exception. I see speaker amps like the Emotiva A100 Mini-X (not necessarily just that specific speaker amp) paired with the HE-6 as some sort of budget headphone amp since the headphone amps that can allegedly drive it cost around the $1000 bracket.

No. No you can't. Not with a home power plug. That's just not possible without a lot of very specialized equipment that has no business being in an audio setup.

Yes. Yes you can. Yeah your right youre not going to be plunging it in next to the kettle. Not as specialized as you would originally think but it has many places in audio setups around the world.

OMG I'm sorry I just went back and realise I said kilowatts meant to just say watts

Yeah... I still don't believe tens of thousands (implying at least 20KW), but certainly a 2-5KW is believable. (the tens of thousands of kilowatts is why I was saying incredibly specialized equipment... LOL)

I wouldn't run it at max all the time, I mean if you do occasionally for brief periods of time you will likely not damage and or stress the drivers... I would caution against it however... you can buy a new pair of headphones... your hearing.... well you could buy a hearing aid, but wouldn't it be easier to use the headphones at a moderate volume... hahaha

The times where my headphones have been at max volume are when I accidentally boosted the volume slider. It happened once by a friend sending me a screamer... Hope that won't damage anything. It was pretty loud.
